hey /k/ i want to get into long range shooting,

although i don't know how to zero a scope at all,
i don't know what the whole MOA-.25 moa increments are, it's confusing to find out what is good for me, scope companies and all that, i don't want to fall for memes

will you guys teach me where to start?
>>
>>33016135
MOA refers to minute of angle. A good shorthand is that for every 100 yards 1 MOA is approximately 1 inch. So a .25 MOA adjustment is going to move your point of aim a quarter of an inch in that direction at 100 yards.

Get gud at shooting at 100 yards first with irons.

thank you very much

im pretty decent at aiming with irons myself, my best is 6 of 10 shots at 160 yards,
my problem is scopes,
i was told for new long range shooters like me i want .25 MOA increments, and then 2 more people tell me i want 1 inch increments and then i started a debate i didn't mean to start at my LGS, so i more or less 360 moonwalked out the store
>>
>>33016219
>6 of 10 shots at 160

inside of what size target?
>>
>>33016228
Not OP but shooting a 9x9 gong at 200 yards i can hit 5/5 with my SKS irons but cannot hit shit with my Scoped CZ527. How do i get ghud with scopes?
>>
>>33016246
I'm not a particularly good shot myself, but my guess is probably you should work on hold and trigger pull.
>>
>>33016246
Shoot paper with your rifle sandbagged. Find where your shots are going in relation to your point of aim.
>>
>>33016228

i couldn't tell you, it was a big old gong me and my friends were shooting at in the middle of his dads land

if i had to compare it to something, maybe Hickoks steel plate in the back of his range?
>>
>>33016283
Yeah, you should definitely work on getting that up to 10/10 with pretty solid consistency. I don't mean to act like I'm some range master, because I'm not, but I think you'll be better served working on the fundamentals now before getting into long range shooting.

Anon, I...
>>
>>33016311
this niggas eating a raw ass tomato lol
>>
>>33016405

its basic math you nogunz fag

1 click at 100yards
=
10 clicks at 1,000
>>
>>33016446
That's not what you said, you said I would need to make a 10 click adjustment to correct for being 1" low at 1,000 yards
>>
>>33016489
Am I having a retard moment or is something inverted somewhere?
>>
>>33016518
It would make for a 10 inch adjustment
>>
>>33016446
>1 click at 100=10 at 1000

Holy shit, are you literally retarded? I don't think click means what you think it means. MOA does not matter what distance you're at, it is a measure of angle. 4 clicks or 1MOA will, at 100 yards, equal a difference of 1". The same thing at 1000 yards will result in a 10" difference.
>>
>>33016489
dont take the bait anon...day /k/

>>33016135
1,000 yard guy was trolling you. A 1 inch moa will move poa 1 inch at 100 yards with a single click. At 200 yards, that 1 click moves poa 2 inches. At 1,000 yards, 1 click will move poa 10 inches.

For real long range shooting, get a 1/8"moa scope
>>
OP here

what brand of scopes should i be looking for?
>>
>>33016577
Leupold
>>
>>33016577
Just starting out, youre not going to need anything crazy. You can use any well known brand like vortex, leupold, nikon, etc. Unless youve got money to blow, just buy a ~$200 scope and practice with it until youre shooting far enough to need a more expensive scope made for long distance shooting.

this.

get really good with irons. then move up to red dots.

technique, technique, technique.

or blaze away at 400 yards and have fun.

who cares
>>
>>33016656
Vortex
>>
Swfa fixed mag (10/12/16) or primary arms 4-14 ffp mildot; I'd recommend the latter

To get on paper, put the rifle on a rest/bipod so you're not having to touch it, pull the bolt out, look down range and center it on the target and look where the scope reticle is pointing. Adjust with turrets and remember that you are moving the point of impact on the knobs, not the reticle (just think of it that way).

Yes it will. Thank me later.
>>
>>33020561
I'm not OP but I think his videos are over the top and too long. Get a savage 6.5CM, a half decent scope, chronograph and a basic reloading setup (143gr Eld with H4350 in Lapua/Norma brass) and get to shooting. Work up a load on paper (not that kind you sick fuck) then move out to steel.
>>
>>33020611
These videos are probably the best source of video knowledge on long range shooting and shooting in general. If OP so chooses to watch them (which I highly encourage) he will gain a deep and intimate understanding of this shooting discipline and will gain the experience necessary to determine what is best for his needs.

What's an acceptable level of proficiency? Say I want to be able to consistently hit 8/10 rounds at 100 yards. How small of a target (in diameter) would I need to be shooting where 8/10 from a bench/prone would be "good?"
>>
>>33021365
They're fucking retarded. Practice with what you will be using. However, with a scope a lot of iron sight fundamentals apply that simply seem to get over looked in higher level optics practice, it doesn't make practicing with irons essential, just apply those fundamentals to practicing with your scope to maximize your benefit.

ALRIGHT FUCKING TANGENT TIME!

1. Make sure scope is mounted fucking level. This is a big fucking deal.

2. adjust your scope as much as possible to you, not your fucking buddy, not what you're fucking told. Learn to look through the scope through the very center. There should be a VERY faint hint of fuzz evenly distributed around the entire field of view. If it's not even, and you don't have it the same every single time you'll have poor sight picture which is a big fucking issue that'll plague you forever until you train it out.

3. Make sure you can comfortably shoulder your rifle with your fucking eyes closed and open your scope eye and see through the fucker. Practice this.

4. DIME DRILLS TIME, FUCKING LOOK IT UP!

5. Zero your scope at 100 yards on a sandbag, make certain the rifle isn't being supported by the barrel. This will give you a different point of impact.

6. Know your point of aim at 25 yards or meters 50 yards or meters 150 yards or meters and 200 yards or meters. you'll learn your adjustments later, for now we're doing the bare fucking minimum. Write these differences down by aiming center and recording location of hits. Write this down, study it AND keep the paper with the rifle until your final fucking breath.

Well, that's all you really need for now. Make the /k/ube proud.

2nd for swfa, their fixed 10 power won't break the bank and is nice enough that if you want to get deeper into the hobby it won't cripple you later.

I recommend a .22 and learning to push that to 200 yards before getting a center fire as well, as it gives you a better understanding of wind age, drop and other factors that will be magnified with longer ranges. Not to mention much cheaper in terms of ammunition.

learn to shoot groups at 50 yards/meters and get familure with adjusting your optic, then push a second target to 75 m.

Using the same adjustment for your 50 M/y shots learn what your drop for 75m/y is and write it down in your note book.( note temp and type of ammo.) Rinse and repeat until you've push to 200 yards.

Then , set targets at random distances, and try to get first round hits on em based on those numbers.

Since you don't know what you want or need yet, might as well start out with something inexpensive like a Vortex Viper 4-16, Primary Arms 4-14 or SWFA SS 10x.

All you need to do is spend more than $200 on the scope and spend more than $350 on the rifle to avoid complete garbage tier. An SWFA SS 10x is $300 and a Tikka T3 is $500. So for $800 you could have a very respectable firearm.

btw /k/ is a terrible resource for new shooters. Or just about anything really. Trying not to sound like a cunt, but you should check out forums like snipershide, youtube videos like tiborasaurusrex/NSSF/or maybe resources like Army or Marine field manuals.

You'll probably want to go aftermarket if you're looking for 1000 plus yards. I'm not even sure if there's any angle on it.

Buy a TrackingPoint.
>>
>>33021869
Ty, very informative.
>>
>>33022031
Best guess is because you want to find the load combination that shoots best in your particular rifle. As in, the round your barrel likes the best, and the powder grain and quantity that it shoots best with. Also, so you can make up hotter loads than the manufacturers produce, which is also a bit more risky.
