If it doesn't have any surface corrosion and you can still hear the loose powder inside go ahead and shoot it. To be extra safe maybe pull one of the bullets and check for clumping powder or any signs of interior corrosion.

Did you clean all the cosmo out of the spring and interior of the bolt body? Does the cocking piece # match the bolt body #?.

Real talk /k/

Restore or continue to part out?

I bought it at the LGS because i needed parts and it was cheap enough. Now I'm having second thoughts. Its a 22nd series Kokura with a chrome bore, beautiful rifling, AA sights, and sadly a ground mum. Bolt is mismatched but is chrome faced (and matches itself) from a Howa or Izawa going by the series.

Wood is fucked. Cut off at the band and so stupidly heavily sanded the (missing) buttplate doesn't even have inletting anymore. Handguard is a qtpie but is also cut, though it wasn't sanded. May keep the wood handy for repair fodder, or maybe doctor it up and throw a rebored bubba into it for milsurp durr

I'm only 120 into it, so if i can get a proper stock with the metal i could have a complete rifle for normal prices.

You put the contact surface of the cocking piece against some solid edge like a table and use it to compress the mainspring, moving it back out of the bolt shroud until you can again engage the safety lever to retain it.

On the bright side, I found out both my mosins are D shanked.

Lesson learned, Finn Mosin is not for barrel brush. That D shank apparently makes for a pretty tight fit on 7.62/

As long as they haven't fucked with the stock no. Surplus ammo was (is) corrosive so be sure to check the bore.
>>
So I mentioned I found a mauser with all the German markings scrubbed off that was otherwise identical to a '43 98k next to it. I was told it was probably Romanian.

Are those decent Mausers if I want a shooter? Do they have any historical value with the markings being scrubbed? Since I have Finn rifles it would be a cool start to a "one of all the minor Axis powers" collection potentially but I dont want to pick up a rifle that was refurrb surplus rifle used in the years after WWII.

What tends to be a going rate for them? Not really seeing much listed as Romanian Mausers on GunBroker. Are they called VZ24's or is that something different?
>>
>>33007904
If you want a shooter they're fine and have value of their own, but fiscally speaking not as much as a unmolested German one. However it is almost a guarantee that they were used after the war by the Romanians, not during the war, at least in such a condition. Nowadays they're around $450 or so.
>>
>>33007952
would $450 be for a nice one or a lower end one?
>>
>>33008015
For a Romanian 98k? It'd be a fair price for a good example. For a vz24? I can't say with certainty, but its on the higher side and would probably have to be pretty nice.

I recently bought 5 milsurp rifles at an estate sale, two are semi automatics and the rest are bolt actions. Do you guys believe it's necessary to take these to a gunsmith for safety checks? The gunsmiths around me all charge $40-100 per rifle for just a simple safety check. If anyone here has any stories of catastrophic or just potentially dangerous failures of their milsurp guns I would be very interested in hearing them.
>>
>>33012346
You actually have gunsmiths around willing to look at yours?

Around here apparently no one will touch a gun unless it's hunting rifle, AR 15, or 9mm/45, given that the only gun smith in town recommended me to another guy and he won't return my calls or emails.

I'm about to have to drive an hour at this rate just to find a gunsmith who isn't afraid of a gun made more than 20 years ago.

This is for a Lee Enfield, but the basic principles apply to all your guns. Bore obstructions or grease, firing pin protrusion and shape, deep pitting, cracks in the stock or the metal, rounding or mis-shaping of the metal in your trigger oor sear assembly.

Any old gunsmith won't suffice because they won't necessarily know how to get your gun apart or trouble spots to look for. I've never paid one myself but I'm also a metallurgist with years of experience in quality control and destructive and non-destructive testing. Also, wear your safety glasses.

A little saddle soap for the leather, if it's not so bad that applying it would pull the thing apart. Rag and oil is all you need for the blade, unless there's active red rust. If the wood is oily, like with machine oil or general purpose oil, you'd have to scrub and leech it out of the wood which will do more harm than good likely. I would leave the wood, wipe away the oil with a rag and, if you want, the faintest hint of mineral spirits/paint thinner.
>>
>>33016337
>>33023168
Saddle soaps and similar things shouldn't be used. Stuff made for boots and saddles, things that are meant to be used versus things meant to preserve leather are two completely different things.

The best way to preserve leather is to keep it in a stable environment.

There is nothing wrong with "corrosive" ammo. All you need to do is flush the barrel out with water as it leaves hygroscopic salts in the bore.

Damn, is that an average/normal price? Also, does that set come with barrel bands, or do I have to get those separate?

The one I'm looking at (at LGS, haven't jumped on it yet cause financially responsible) looks pretty close to pic related. I guess the guy who had it before free floated the barrel. So if I jump on it, I'll have to drop another $150 on a stock set, and a few more $$ for barrel bands and such?

If you guys were doing this as a project for yourselves, what would be your limit to spend total (for rifle, parts, etc)? I'm just curious if I'm about to get into something that costs more than it's worth.

Plan on putting it to use, by the way, not for any collector value since the guy already turned it into a sporter.

Yes, you'll need to get the barrel bands, sling loops, front sight protector and such.

Kinda depends on how much the rifle is and its condition.

I wouldn't unless you really want to restore it.
>>
>>33030031
You are. It'll never be worth what you put into it money wise. So you can either do it, rationalizing that it'll be restoring history. Or you can turn it into a replica of something much harder to obtain, like a sniper or something.

To what are you referring, exactly?

>>33030057
>What did that cost you?
$750, which was probably too much considering the stock was partially-stripped of finish because someone over-enthusiastically cleaned it. On the other hand, it is 99% matching; only the cleaning rod is off. I think it may have been a War Bond rifle; the firing pin tip was deliberately bent until it snapped.

I wanted a Gew.98 really bad, and a 1914-dated Mauser-brand Mauser with so many matching numbers I just couldn't let go. I picked up an all-matching 1899-dated Argentine Model 1891 for $250 and a post-Civil War refurbished-matching 1923-dated Spanish Model 1893 for $250 on the same day though, so it all works out I suppose.
>>
>>33030252

Is $650-$700 a good price range for a No.1 or No.4? Or is that an unreasonable amount? Most local shops around here tend to price things high. But then again, I've noticed milsurp prices HAVE been going up.
>>
>>33030632
That's pretty high for a No4, and depends on which example of a No1 you're dealing with.

Best to avoid it if possible; you have a bigger budget for cleaning supplies than the army that ordered the rifle. I have a 40" carbon-fiber rod for mine.

A lot of the cleaning rods do not have the jags as they were in a pouch or only given to the squad leader. The slotted end is usually for a screwdriver.

>>

Depends how self righteous you feel you are. On the one hand you'll be spending the same amount either way, but the restoration will never be a good return financially. On the other hand, you're rebuilding a old war horse, putting in hard work for something you care about and are preserving history. Also you can make it look immaculate without feeling guilty or getting shit on.

go to every gun store possible and look for military surplus ammunition.

you can always try cabelas online. seems like 8mm mauser with non-corrosive is 18-19 bucks for them.

I went full retard and bought .303 british from big 5 sporting goods. lost 40 bucks for 20 rounds because of that.

Right now there's no-one online who has Yugo M49 or M75. Just order some PPU; even after shipping it's still cheaper than $1.00/rd.

it's big 5. they don't stock .303 or 8mm mauser. both were 39.99.

I went to cabelas and bought .303 FMJ for 17 bucks or something.

what are some average prices to pay on milsurp rifles like mausers, enfields, mosins, etc. i know nothing about military surplus rifles and want to snag a few
>>
>>33043131
Just some ballparks for you.
Mosins
91-30s are going to be around 2-300 from fair to bullshit pricing.
M44s will be 300-400
M39s will probably be 350-700 depending on a lot of factors.
M48 Mausers 250-400
K98 Russian captures(non-matching, import mark and possibly an X marking and number stamped on left of stock butt) are becoming absurd at 600-900. They're hardly worth the lower end. Yugo captures with the yugo crest and all markings scrubbed otherwise are cheaper.
All matching with no import will be 900-3k depending. Don't go for these unless you know your shit. Don't even consider a german K98 with a white bolt.
Czech Mausers can be had cheaper as well as FN Mausers.

I don't know a lot about enfields.

All German Kar.98k rifles had their bolts either blued or phosphated at the factory; they should never be in-the-white.

It's a big warning that the rifle you're looking at is not in original condition.
