What is the deal with these guys?
What do you think about them?
>>
They're badass, ten SOG teams straight up vanished in the jungle and were never heard from again, and another fourteen teams were entirely killed in action
>>
>>32995942
Hands down the most interesting special operations team from any era, or any country. I have read alot of books on them. Dudes are fucking gods among men.

Those guys blow my mind, have read John Plaster's at least a half-dozen times. By far my favorite book.

Guys don't get a enough praise.
>>
>>32995610
Those guys are as close to naked snake as you can get without recurring to fiction.
>>
>>32995989
Guys did recon in Laos and Cambodia on the Ho Chi Minh Trail, during the Vietnam War.

Literally a insane suicide mission, it was for many.
>>
>>32995991
To be fair they cant get too much praise since their missions were beyond top secret and the President himself often times personally OK'd their missions.

>>32996024
Yet they continued to go out and do it, no Idea how those guys didnt snap instantly from the pressure.

>>32995991
Ive read this book too, 100% the place to start for anything relating to SOG, not to mention its just a good read in general.

Honestly I have read alot of Navy Seal books and those guys seem like basic grunts compared to SOG. Seal's take on reasonable missions, SOG just pulled off batshit insane missions.
>>
>>32996214
thanks for the title.. that's nice.. hard for me to believe anyone could read chuck pfarrer's book and maintain such an attitude afterwards..

The ballsiest mission in my eyes, and a real feat was Operation Spindown.

Hatchet Force sets up roadblock from a nearby hilltop on HW 110 for three fucking weeks.

Entire time they were knocking out trucks with 90mm recoilless rifle.

Only 2 KIA, and that was result of friendly fire (Napalm CAS, IIRC).

Also pic related is a pretty cool story in itself.

>Located on a 1,000 meter peak ten miles within the border of southern Laos, the Leghorn (Golf-5) Relay Station station was a vital communications link between MACV-SOG recon teams operating within Laos to American bases in South Vietnam. Its presence allowed teams to maintain contact with air support and extraction choppers and also allowed NSA agents to monitor tremendous amounts of NVA radio traffic and ground activity.
>It was also highly defensible, being located at the peak of a mountain with near-vertical sides. Easy access was only available via helicopter. SOG Lt. George Sisler, the founder of the relay station, was confident in its defensibility, saying “I am absolutely certain that I could stay on that rock indefinitely.” And he was correct. Sisler and his team held on to the desolate peak for five years without incident until it was shut down in 1972.

I always thought their snatch and grab missions were crazy. The one where they went in one day and fucking grabbed a truck driver in broad daylight (albiet sunset) out of a like 25 truck convoy. They just went in blew up the second to last truck, then shot the passenger in the last truck and snatched the driver. All this with 7 or 8 men.
>>
The glory days. When operators didn't have to worry about people finding out about their operational operations.
>Rape, gang rape, rape using eels, snakes, or hard objects, and rape followed by murder; electric shock ('the Bell Telephone Hour') rendered by attaching wires to the genitals or other sensitive parts of the body, like the tongue; the 'water treatment'; the 'airplane' in which the prisoner's arms were tied behind the back, and the rope looped over a hook on the ceiling, suspending the prisoner in midair, after which he or she was beaten; beatings with rubber hoses and whips; the use of police dogs to maul prisoners
Good times.

You guys should look into the LRRPers too. Those fuckers would go into the jungle for months at a time as recon and guerilla forces. Apparently their K/D ratio was somewhere around 400 enemy dead for each LRRPer. They often went crazy and were found to commit numerous war crimes (mostly killing civilians) but the army never prosecuted them. Tiger Force is probably most well known for that.

The funny thing is that my grandfather was a Vietnamese officer at the time who did those sorts of operations attached to SOF teams and when I asked him about the civilian deaths his response was basically

>You couldn't take chances with that. Viet Cong friendly villages would often strip the combatants of their weapons and start screaming that they were civilians, or the VC would shoot at us from the direction of a village and scatter so we'd destroy a village and turn them into more VC.

MACV SOG is badass because they went into Indian Territory with thousands of their enemies. The Phoenix Program is edgy, not elite.

I understand it was understated, but I believe that anon was being sarcastic, especially since he specifically mentioned operation red wings.
>>
>>32996517
For as many times that they tried it, and shit went tits-up, it admirable that they kept trying (and succeeding here and there).

>>33007667
Completely ignorant to what SOG went up against.

Kunar Valley could well be a joke compared to some of the sites those guys inserted into.

Red Wings faced what 40:1, SOG routinely faced 200:1.
>>
>>33007868
But the Vietcong wasn't as advanced as the taliban
>>
>>33007747
Are you implying pissed off soldiers, intelligence officers, and civilians torturing prisoners is somehow equivalent to special forces combat operations?

It was necessary and brutal but hardly elite or that difficult. That's like saying all the gooks who massacred and raped their American prisoners were somehow better elite combat troops because of it, which clearly wasn't the case given their horrible casualty rate against basic American infantry let alone LRRP or Special Operations Units.
>>
>>33007908
I really hope that is sarcasm.
>>
>>33007975
>battle being so lax you can take 4 yards who can't even speak English with you

Yea sure the Vietcong were worse. There is a reason we don't take afghans with elite teams and it's because the fighting is so intense the teams can't count on them. Same couldn't be said about the intensity level of vietnam
>>
>>33008017

You could argue conversely that the devastated yards and south vietnamese (when led by officers worth a shit) were better than the retarded afghans who run out of cover and fire at a mountain hoping for the best.

The perspective I was speaking from with how well developed the HCM trail system defense systems were by the NVA.

>integrated ADA assets, AA guns and SAMs
>dedicated counter-recon units
>running into small armored units
>ability to coordinate regiment size response to less than 10 recon team

The Ho Chi Minh Trail is truly one of the most underrated accomplishments in modern warfare, in design, function, and ability to rapidly respond to all measures of threats/obstacles.

We could roll through B-52s on one particular segment of the trail, and they could repair it in less than 36 hours IIRC.

You shouldn't be scared, you should learn all you can. Remember civilians have no business judging warriors any more than a virgin should have opinions about fucking.

The remaining veterans are disappearing and their personal histories with them. You might ask about doing an oral history with him with the understanding it will not be released while he's alive unless he wants it so. You may think it minor but that's how history is preserved.

Your education is grossly deficient. Fix it. The Viet Minh beat FFL and Paras like a rented mule long before the US got into the game, and were a highly organized and effective force. They were bled out in Tet but accomplished their mission.

Compared to the Vietnamese the Taliban are a clown show.
>>
>>33010556
Unlikely. It's way more convenient to kill captives in jungle and there's no reason not to unless senior leadership really wants them AND knows you have live ones. Captives are a burden and there's no moral reason to take prisoners in that sort of war. Easier to finish the wounded with a security shot or a knife and press on with business.

Any remaining prisoners would have extremely negative value once the war ended, and keeping them for revenge is an incredibly foolish security risk.
