Very few armies operate fixed-wing attack aircraft. Helicopters are simply a better fit for their needs.

AF is a large enough branch with enough unique missions that it benefits from having air power specialists in control of it, rather than generals who see the AF as an asset to aid land based armies.

Is there any reason 80% of the Air Force shouldn't just be contractors?

Between the intelligence guys and the air traffic controllers and the admin people, even the security forces, having everyone there be fully enlisted servicemen just seems inefficient.

I don't have anything against the Air Force, it just seems like a vestigial piece of the Cold War.

Air Force is all about "fight smarter, not harder." You're given a comparatively easier life in exchange for having a clean record and the smarts to do shit with your brain. Joining the AF is literally like having your pick of any college in the country, and then people chastise you for choosing Harvard or Yale instead of Clown College because that's all they were able to get into.

AMMO troop here, can confirm.

We have to measure how many micrometers thick the hangers on the missiles are. We measure gouges in wings and fins with precision calipers. I go over a bunch of CATM AIM-9Ms and 9Xs with a cleanser and a can of gray paint every single day to make sure they are pristine.

There is no graffiti. Literally none.


We do deface the shit out of bombs on deployments though.
