thoughts on old breaktop revolvers? i know lots of them are dangerous but they seem like they'd be fun to shoot if you could find one that wouldn't kill you...
and what about carrying one? i know there are better options but would say, 32 s&w work for defense at all?
>>
>>32983305

Not ideal but it's better than nothing.
>>
They are safe but not built for hot loads.

They were first built from wrought iron and fired black powder. People found out a gun built like that won't fire smokeless.

These days repros are built from solid steel. IIRC it will handle smokeless fine but not super hot loads.

>>32983360
was mostly talking about the older pocket type revolvers. reason i ask about .32 is i've heard its loaded lighter than it was back in the day so people don't sue. just thinking it'd be a nice way to get a top break without paying for a repro model 3 or a webley.
would be even nicer if i could find one with enough oomph to carry though.
>>
>>32983305
I mean it could ita better then nothing. Id look for 38 s&w. H&r made top breaks in the 70s that are okay. Just get a modern snubby its a better bet for carry.
>>
>>32983458
>modern snubby
that's the plan. just started thinking about these things earlier and wondered if they're effective at all. 38 s&w would probably be a lot better but the 32s seem a little more common

It is but mostly and blank form. You see a lot of 32 sw long most of those revolvers are chambered for 32 sw short. Try and find a hr 925 or similar used. Modernish. There chambered in 32 sw long and 38 sw. Remeber a break top has no real adavantages. Swing out cylinders are stronger and less autistic.

Mostly in blank form is what i meant to say. Im fairly drunk.

Once shot 32 h&r magnums at a car door from 80ish feet away. Only dented the door.
>>
>>32983852
>less autistic
the autisticity is my only draw to break tops(other than the ancient ones being cheap) but i'll be on the look out for a 925.
>>32983941
that just confirms a 32 isn't worth the risk of carrying
>>
>>32983927
Iver Johnson revolvers are great
>>
Keep in mind that most manufacturers load .32 short at old specs nowadays because they know most of the revolvers used are old. I think some of them do the same for long.

I have a couple and I shoot them here and there. A few that are pre-98. I shoot very light loads in them though.

>but keep in mind that my family has in it's possession a S&W Model 1 one of my ancestors got off some dead yankee officer during the War of Northern Aggression and we still shoot it too with CB's.

I very much disagree. .38 S&W is 30 bucks for a box of 50. AND you'll have to explain that you are not looking for S&W brand .38 special EVERY SINGLE TIME you ask for it.

32 sw is any easier? I dont think so homie. Either one is a pain

Ok, let me rephrase that: 30 bucks for anything you can find in person.

Breaktops are cool, a lot of them are nifty little pocket pieces. In good shape the top strap wouldn't be as much of a worry to me as the cylinder timing. They are fun to shoot, wouldn't carry one. The rounds are anemic, limited to lead projectiles, and the guns are old. Bad combo.

Unless you can find a good Webley. I'm still looking for one in good shape and roughly in budget.
>>
>>32984441
Not everything is "far cheaper" online unless you buy lots of bulk. And I'm not really interested in buying 500 rounds for a turn of the century revolver I bought for 100 bucks.

I will admit however that I never looked very hard to find free shipping ammo (shipping being the cost that kills most online savings for me).
>>
>>32984360

My local academy carries both. I think they had some Aquilla or whatever the fuck it is 32 long for $17.99. Some 32 shorts for $25.99 but were out of stock. 38 S&W was also out of stock and 27.99 I think.

but your mileage may vary

But I sell ammo at gun shows here and there as part of my business (hoping to expand to a full FFL in the future) and I always sell a lot of these oddball pistol calibers for $25 flat. Usually sell a box or two every show. Not a lot of profit but more often than not, I've had guys buy other stuff from me just because I was the only vendor selling their oddball caliber without gouging their assholes silly.
>>
>>32983305
Fun range toy. Not going to risk my life using my .38S&W Enfield No4MkI revolver as a carry gun when I have much more deadly options.
>>
>>32985086
**No.2MkI** that is.

>The rounds are anemic
looked into .38 s&w a little earlier, definitely not something i'd WANT to rely on, but i'm thinking it'd do the job if it's all you had.

I have one of these and love it, very solid feel and well built. have to hand load the rounds though, as someone said before modern factory loads are a bit much for these. Theres usually a few on gunbroker for 400-500 for a shaved cylinder. Expect the unshaved ones to go for over a G

Because I've put a good .32 S&W Long game load through a car door.
