What is a good make and what's a good caliber? Henry big boy in .357?

Or is it better to get something in a true rifle round like a 30/30 or some shit

pill me on lever actions and what would be most fun and slightly economical to shoot. after shooting .22s im done with pussy shit
>>

Unless you plan to hunt with your lever-action, like some weirdo fucking cowboy serial-killer, go with .357 lever action. Ammo is cheaper. .38 special is a good bargain for plinking around and doing cool swirly-terminator one-handed gun-play and fucking about a lever action is great.

If you plan to hunt, go into combat, ect get a different rifle.

Anyone recommend a good lever action thats not a henry? I prefer side loading gate on an lever gun

Pistol/Rifle Cartridges:
.
357/.38SP: Good for a revolver, but loses its energy quickly and will have significantly less stopping power past 50-75 yards. Fine if you just want to shoot targets, but the bullet will have significant drop beyond short ranges.

.44M/.44SP: While not a rifle round, a .44M can be trusted to drop a deer or hog at 100 yards.

44-40: Like a .44M/.44SP, but weaker. Only use if you're into black powder.

.45LC: Despite its age, it can be loaded to achieve energies comparable to a .44M. More expensive and make damn sure your gun is built to handle a hot loading.

Rifle Only:

30-30: An intermediate cartridge from before there were intermediate cartridges. 30-06 and .308 are more powerful, but a 30-30 hits harder and goes father than any rifle/pistol cartridge and is good for deer/hog out to 150-200 yards

.35 REM: Heavier cousin to the 30-30. Inferior at longer ranges, but hits harder under 100 yards.

45-70 GOVT: Elderly, but highly versatile cartridge that relies on the fact that a large hunk of lead (~350-500 grains) is lethal almost irrespective of velocity. At long ranges (+200), it will have a very pronounced rainbow trajectory but will still hit like freight-train. Still best at closer ranges, at which it will "anchor" most beasties to the ground by force of impact. Be careful not to use modern high-power loads in older guns. Expensive, but reputed to be easy to reload.

The Browning Lever Action use a box magazine and can work with just about any short-action rifle cartridge (30-06, .308, .270, etc.).

Exotic beasts include Marlin 444, 450, 308 express, and 338 express.

>>
>>32964426
Winchester: Classic, but ejects from the top, making it trickier to scope. Also tends to be more expensive.

Marlin: QA problems for guns made shortly after being acquired by Remington. Side-eject for easy scooping and micro-grooved barrels (I had no idea if makes a difference). Purists hate Remlins with a cold hard passion and will only trust a JM stamped gun.

Rossi: Brazilian manufacturer. Some people won't even consider them, but others love them. Fit and finish issues are reported, but are said to work themselves out as the gun is broken in. By far the least expensive option without throwing quality out the window.

>>32964547
Used winchester aren't that bad pricewise avoid cast receivers from post 1964-1980ish but I have one and it works fine but the reciver finish is a bit thin.

Also the top eject problem was fixed a while ago with angled eject allowing optics to be installed normally.

I have this exact gun in the video except its in .357
Everything about the gun is amazing minus the sights.... I decided to replace sights with skinner peep sight and taller front post. I can bust 1.5 inch groups at 50 all day and did i mention the gun is fun as hell to shoot? Something about a lever action that gets the ole nuts tingling.

Honestly OP I have a 30-30 Marlin 336 from before they were bought and it seems every time I take it out I fall in love with it again. Go for the full sized cartridge! then you can hunt with it if you wanna.

It must be noted that new Marlins are back to being decent again. The Pre-Rem buyout fit quality was because they were manufactured without any kind of base reference measures by hand on ancient equipment that was in such bad shape they'd sunk into the floor and had grease dams welded around them.

>>32963740
My first gun was a henry .22 lever gun. I love it to death and have shot thousands of rounds through it. The action is like butter and I've rarely had issues with a large variety of .22 ammo types. (The only issue is has is that occasionally with lead bullets the nose pops up a little too much when the action is opened, and then closing the action kinda jams the bullet at a weird angle. the soft led deforms and sticks in place, so you can chamber it. I've never had the issue with copper bullets, as they can slide and right themselves. It's also not an issue if you cycle the action quickly, but I tend not to count my rounds and I don't want to dry fire it that much).

Henrys are great, the only thing I don't like is the no loading gate thing. It's understandable in the .22lr version of their guns, but in larger caliber versions it feels weird to have the pull the front of the mag off and drop in cartridges.

For larger caliber guns, just keep in mind that .30-30 is almost always $0.60+ per round. Even the cheap shit is that expensive. If you want to do a lot of plinking I'd probably go .357 because cheap, steel cased .38 special and .357 is available and not too hard to find. .30-30 is found in a lot of places, but it's not cheap by any stretch.
>>
>>32964828
Can 30-30 bust hogs?
>>
>>32963991
I didnt see here he implied that anon.

His sentament that its largely impractical to get a .45-70 levergat without using it to hunt is correct, as the price per bullet is absurd, closing it at 2usd per round.

Now, if he reloaded that'd be a different story, but even then, it can be annoying.

>>32964426
>>32964441
If you havent tried a loading gate, I suggest you do before you declare a preference for one. They arent the be all end all I originally thought them to be, and they pinch like a motherfucker.

What point does 357 serve in a rifle

At least with 44mag you could hunt
>>
>>32968799
see >>32968764
>>
Are you looking to shoot anything but paper targets and old junk?
30-30 and up should be fine for general hunting, and what little you can't take with a .45-70 you can probably get with a .50 Alaskan.
I'm really fond of the aesthetics of the Marlin leverguns with laminate stocks and stainless steel (1895SBL and 336XLR) as a more modern take on leverguns, but Henry makes some really beautiful classic-looking ones too.

You can load .357 up to .30-30 levels out of 16" barrels with the right amount of powder and bullet weight, people hunt durr with them within 75 yards fine
>>
>>32968717
.357mag and .44mag become solid short-range medium game cartridges out of lever guns. .44mag even edges up into usefulness for brown bear, although only at "if you miss you're going to get fucking mauled" ranges.

>>
>>32969380
Hence why he said it can go through heavier brush. Though there have been people loading pretty heavy stuff through a x39 so if you reload (which anyone who owns a .30-30 pretty much needs to do) you can get just as good.
>>
>>32969431
if your justification for a caliber is strictly because you can handload it to be comparable to another caliber, why not just buy the stronger caliber that you don't have to reload
>>
>>32964433
>.35 Rem
My durr rifle is a 336 in .35 rem. That shit hits hard.
Core lokt is non existing locally, expensive as hell online ($1.50 per round).
If you dont plan on hunting with your levergat I would go with .357/.38sp for savings.
>>
>>32972633
I think you misunderstand him.

He reloads anyway, and in doing so is able to push .357 up to .30-30 standard levels. Meaning he doesnt have a reason to go with the other, more expensive (even to reload) cartridge.

probably the same people who say .357 wont kill durr despite the fact that JSP .357 in a 6" barrel is more than adequate for a 180 lb human, let alone 16-24 inches.
