What were the Swiss thinking when they made this rifle in the late 50s?

During that same period you already had the following guns being used by other armies:

>FAL
>CETME/G3
>AKM

Just why? It's heavy and unergonomic. It's like a issuing a MG3 as your main weapon.
>>
A domestically produced (important for a 2nd world country during the cold war) .308 that is highly accurate? Sounds sensible. Weight has never mattered to the Swiss since they dont deploy anywhere, so any fight they get in will be defensive and therefore static. As for ergos, idk what you mean, the ones Ive held were very comfy.
>>
>>32955376
To be fair it was the closest thing to a controllable full auto battle rifle. FG42 brake, bipod, and straight line stock. It was also heavy as fuck which helped.

The Swiss love heavy rifles. Even the StG90 is heavy.
>>
>>32955407
This
It is an other concept than the amerifat one
In the 50s was nothing like today, they had not as much equipment and therfor didnt had to watch evers gramm

Its in 7.5 Swiss. The. 308 is the export model.

We want a selectfire rifle capable of the same precision.

Oh, the Socialist People's Confederation of Switzerland. I finally get why they have a red flag.

Cut up, hilly, partialy wooded "flat lands" with creeks and rivers everywhere.
Theres just one killing field after another, perfectly suited for a defensive doctrin.

They literally requested a domestically produced full auto capably rifle which in semi auto would still be at least as accurate as the K31. Which is madness. But they did it.

No other rifle design at the time was able to meet those requirements, so they couldn't license an existing design.

The definitions used to be different (in that it used to be a formal term), first world was America and Nato, second world was the Soviet Empire and the Warsaw Pact, and third world was whoever wasn't aligned with either.

Now, since most unaligned countries were in Africa and South America, third world just eventually became a shorthand for "really shitty place with a low energy economy", and once the Soviet Imperium deflated like an inflatable sexdoll bought at Craigslist, the phrase "third world" kind of hung around to describe these places and eventually just morphed to mean "a fucking shit place".

For instance, North Korea and Cuba were second world countries because they were aligned with the Soviet Union, but their living standards are what most people would think of when you say "third world" (though they're inarguably much much worse than your average third world country).

By either the old formal definition, or the modern informal use, you could never call the Swiss second world.

They could probably have copied the AR10.

Imagine an AR10 in 7.5x55mm with a bipod and hefty brake.

Stgw57, as the name implies was in service & full production in 1957.
The AR10 was not ready for primetime at all back then.

As reliable as a well cared for G3.
Swiss weapons tend to be tested in pretty fucked up winter conditions.

Dreadfully inaccurate because the magazine pushes against the fucking bolt. Swiss military doctrine (it exists, believe it or not) has always been all about precision shots.
>CETME/G3
Does not function well in the cold. See Alaskan State Troopers tests for more info.
>AKM
Associating yourself with Russia wasn't exactly smart at the time.

Is the Stgw 57 still used in the Swiss army?

What's their DRM?
>>
>>32959229
It's currently issued to some reservists but that's all.
Their "DMR" is just a SG 550 (Sturmgewehr 90) variant with a heavier barrel and fancy stock.
>>
>>32955376
It's precise, accurate, and manufactured to a level of quality simply not found in any of the other rifles you listed, and it's beautiful.
>>
>>32959263
No changes. Its just a streight up Sig 550, with a Kern scope 4x24 mounted with a quick detatchable hold.
The sniper one you think off was not adopted.

Why wouldn't it? They were on the forefront of army theory until they decided that killing their male populace on the reg wasn't worth it, and since then they've been right in the middle of the biggest wars of all time eyeing their borders nervously.

The M14 weighs the same as any other battle rifle of the era and is extremely ergonomic for a rifle with a traditional rifle style stock.

Switzerland was 100% aligned with NATO, although not part of it. It also had units in NATO's stay behind organization.
