Ya, it's not a 1:1 replica of the original, but to anyone who just has a casual interest in owning a STG44, it's close enough. I can understand hardcore collectors rejecting it, but it's close enough for me.

The reproduction versions should be fine, unless they are made of whittled cheddar cheese, or cast Chineseium..
A lot of the changes are likely to make the reproduction more durable and more reliable than the original, while still passing the ATF's odious nonsense.

So trying to make it as true to the original, have interchangeable calibers, and making it to the quality of a modern gun seems like a bit of a nightmare.

The locking system was a product of necessity and if you are going to fuck with the recoil springs and trigger pack, it might as well be converted to an AR18 style system like all other modern piston guns, At this point it's just a pretty crappy rifle that passingly has the same silhouette as an STG44... Also it's really expensive for a gimmick...

Which caliber though? I have 300blk and 5.56 AR's already, and x39 AK's. So I would have commonality for any caliber. What should I get? I don't want x39 because that severe curve you get from having the magwell.

One of the reasons for using HK trigger packs is that the original FCG was not only a complex mess, but it was riveted in place. Going with a trigger pack cuts down production costs and makes it easier to maintain or upgrade.

A downside to that is now the outside of the gun doesn't have the same stampings as the original. The parts that changed the most in HMG's gun are to accommodate the trigger pack.

They were out of brass at that point so the gun was designed around steel.
HMG engineer said himself when they were testing as close to the original gun the brass would bend like a banana because the way the gun locks and unlocks the bolt but that never happened when they used steel ammo which indicated that Germans knew very well what they were doing and what were their capabilities in terms of materials for ammo.
