Can someone please explain to me why apparently this thing would never be able to even fly in a straight line, let alone be capable of VTOL?
>>
>>32934727
Its Power to Weight Ratio is out of balance they way i see it if such a thing is made with todays technology it would never even lift off . The engine is too weak to lift such a beast that looks like it has inches of armor plating .Im not sure that it gets enough energy from its powerplant to power the jet engine and wing rotors
>>
Because it's a cartoon.
>>
>>32934772
That... actually makes a lot more sense than what I was expecting. I thought it was going to be something to do with the rotors fucking up the aerodynamics of the wings.

ARMA 3 Apex DLC
>>32934727
With enough power it'll fly; it's a terribly inefficient design though.
>>
>>32934822
I didn't know even ARMA is going sci-fi.
>>
>>32934727
I'm no expert, but having those jets so far above the center of mass even when the thing's unloaded just screams 'uncontrollable pitch down' to me. But then again like I said, I have no idea what I'm talking about.

>>32934839
It's set in like 2035. Mostly to get around having to license shit, I'd imagine.
>>
>>32934839
ARMA 3 has been near-future 'sci-fi' since release, the Apex DLC added some more futuristic stuff along with bringing back some present day rifles.
>>
>>32934865
Those engines are so far back I'd expect the airplane to immediately pitch up, stall, and fall out of the sky.
t. kerbal aeronautics engineer.
>>
>>32934868
Yeap if that is the case you have large amounts of mass in the front and engine at the back is going to cause to to do a front roll instead of lifting off
>>
>>32934839
It's set in the 2030s but apparently 2030s = DUDE FUTURE VTOLS LMAO

The Y32 Xian's problems:

____∆_______∆

Ok I didn't think I was capable of making such poor text art, but it works well enough to explain. Just imagine the ∆'s are engines and the +'s are where the weight is. See the problem?

Simple: Don't use the stock content.

The CUP/RHS content makes the game.

When has BIS, or any dev for that matter, been required to license anything? Only time its been done is with Remington/Walther in MW3 and that was voluntary for "muh realism" cred. Goddamn this baseless meme is so fucking pervasive.

not him but that too

if both lift in the same direction, the fans will make it spin like a blender

if they lift in alternating directions, it will do flips left or right

Lift fans in the wings would make poor lifting surfaces. Unless the fans are covered in level flight for smooth wing surfaces.

Engine intakes are above the wing. They can potentially be starved of air in some maneuvers.

Lift fans are not big enough. Would require enormous amount of power and RPMs. They would probably go super sonic and become ineffective. Not to mention the noise and vibration would make the crew and passengers ill.

Any pitch problems can be corrected by vectoring the thrust.

Engines are too small. If they were just turbines driving helicopter blades or prop tors, you would be fine.
>>
>>32941360
Concept is fine. If you can figure out how to not shoot the props.
>>
>>32934975

If it's any consolation the NPC dialogue criticizes the Blackfish for being a piece of shit death trap that breaks down often.

This is not a problem for transport aircraft, because AoA is never extreme.

As long as the rear was heavy as fuck, and the front was made of strofoam it would totally....crash and violently explode. Those engines in the rear are too damn small, and they cant do double duty as a torque source for the lift fans and provide lift in a pivot down mode, which is when they would be used.

Seems kinda heavy. Also those wings are very, very short, and fans don't provide very much thrust.

If it were like, engine pods or something, it'd be plausible but just fans like that wouldn't work.

Posting the same image I did last time. It's an aerodynamic nightmare in level flight.
>>
>>32934727
Well there are ducts on the wings and nozzles on the tail, both configured to produce lift. So if this thing is to VTOL, we can assume that the CG is SOMEWHERE between the ducts and the nozzles.

Now, from an aerodynamic perspective, stability in forward flight is also dependent on CG. The further forward the CG is with respect to the aerodynamic center, the higher the stability. The further aft the CG, the lower (or more negative) the stability. For a typical wing, the aerodynamic center is 25% of the mean chord, and the center of gravity MUST be at or forwards of this point for the aircraft to be stable in forward flight. Do you see a problem yet?

To me it looks even worse for yaw stability. Even if the CG is as forward as we can put it while still having viable VTOL capability from the visible lifting devices (i.e. right between the centers of the ducts), I just don't see any way that those tiny vertical tails could yield sufficient stability to overcome the fuselage and nose.

All you need to do is replace those 8-engine lift pods with a pair of turboshaft-driven in-wing lift fans.

I wonder when Senior Citizen will ever be declassified.
>>
>>32934727
Looks like it lacks downward thrust under it's nose.
Wouldn't it flip with it's ass over it's head?
>>
>>32941279
What are the retractable grills in front of the lift pods for?
Air ducts or making sure no birds get sucked in?
>>
>>32941969
Proposed operational variant was to make use of more powerful engines. The flying prototype only had the lift engines because the main engines Bristol had available at the time weren't as strong as the planned final variant.
