Ever notice how PTSD diagnoses started becoming more and more common as soon as the government started handing out checks for it? How many of Genghis Khan's men had PTSD? How many Roman legionnaires? How many Crusaders?
>>
>>32931234
You mean around the same time people started realizing that PTSD was a real mental condition and not just cowardice?
>>
>>32931234
you trying to say my pa doesnt have ptsd? youre damn right he doesnt hes a fucken baddass dude he aint no pussy shit he was a marine but for real for real lowkey really are guys out there strugglen you know?

>How many crusaders
Like a fuck ton of them there is literally historical records of it they just didn't know what it was they thought it was demons n shit
>>
I think it may have been different in that they also were accepted and exalted by society, as well as having lots of fellow vets (pretty much every male) around to understand. I think a lot of modern PTSD comes from people feeling isolated and having no one to turn to, plus society is far less structured than it was back then.
>>
>>32931234
Quite a fucking few by all historical accounts

When people were described as being haunted, or having a darkness, a heavy heart, or a lost soul in conjunction with some sort of trauma or violence, that's what they're talking about. They were describing symptoms or the effects of PTSD on someone's personality though, so there could be twenty different diseases, whereas PTSD describes the root cause of the symptom, replacing a swathe of historical maladies with a single modern disorder.
>>
>>32931332

I know a few nam vets.

many have been on meds for ptsd since the 80s.

my 7th grade math teacher was vet. you could see him get jumpy/twitchy when kids would drop a calculatr or close their books too loud.

people who were not predisposed to serving were drafted and it really did fuck with them

explosions cause very small ruptures in the brain that leads to PTSD. It's not traumatic experiences, it's brain damage.

Good goim!

Right. Suddenly there is a new "mental illness" called PTSD, and on the other hand homosexuality no longer is, and now trans-sexualism no longer is, what's next?

Shell Shock is a real war-related illness.
PTSD is made up by psychologists who want to make some good coin. With the backing of drug corporations, who aren't satisfied with the billions they already make, they advertised and lobbied, untill it was registered as a legal mental illness.

Also - the men in the west have become horribly feminized in the past 50 years, that adds up to the problem.

And there's this issue of estrogen from birth control pills fucking up western men's libido, it's still a new thing but worth looking into.
Fact is, the size of western men's testicles has been decreasing in the recent decades, though scientists still aren't sure why. (yea I know /k/ trolls will cling onto that one like a hooker on crack).

Here - I found the TED vid for you, watched it a while back. Here woman explains in detail, how drug company worked hard into brain-fucking americans into buying their sleeping pills "1 in 3 americans doesn't know he can't sleep".
It's no different with PTSD and other made-up illnesses:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bYAQ-ZZtEU
>>
>>32931234
It's caused in part by traumatic brain injuries during explosions, so it increased in the GWOT because of IEDs and the fact people survived injuries that would have killed them in previous wars.

Also, lots of the people you mentioned would have had PTSD, and just not recognized it as such. The symptoms are visible throughout history.

Keep in mind combat hours increased dramatically. The nature of fighting changed. Fighting an insurgency is more stressful than an enemy that sits in front of you and exchanges fire. There might be some of that exploitation but people have real issues. There's also the fact PTSD has gone by other names or not been considered a real problem before

PTST has always been a thing
it's just people are more aware of it

modern warfare has changed a lot of things though
soldiers are surviving more serious injuries, combat has more physical range

troops are more frequently expected to mingle and humanize with the enemy, instead of just running into their village and killing the sub-humans

and there are things on the today battlefield that are truly horrifying, and it is much harder to rotate troops into safe zones because of suicide bombers, IED'd and mortars

there are probably a lot more people observing combat than ever before as well

you need to do society a favor and light yourself on fire.
>>
>>32931234
>How many of Genghis Khan's men had PTSD? How many Roman legionnaires? How many Crusaders?

Probably all of them.
Also, society wasn't nearly as complicated back then. And they were mostly dumb as shit, uneducated and had no regards for human lives.
>>
People were a bit tougher back in the day, they saw more death in their childhood

and PTSD is a broad term that covers a lot of stuff
>>
You can read about people having nightmares about dead allies in medieval literature. It definitely existed, though it may be more prevalent nowadays due to the nature of warfare. Prolonged powerlessness is a major cause, and a medieval soldier wouldn't go through hours of shelling or live for years on end with the fear that some guy can blow up all of his friends without any warning.
>>
PTSD is very real. Even rape victims have been diagnosed with it and their trauma didn't occur over years.
>>32933459
Right, there is even programs that use ancient literature and plays to helping soldiers relate their own experiences.
Search " ancient myth helps soldiers with PTSD"

George Patton was taken off the front lines for a while after slapping two soldiers in hospitals that didn't have any physical injuries. He didn't believe in what they called "battle fatigue" at the time.
>>
Watch videos of ww1 shellshock victims... Shits intense. It broke them, to be shelled like that

imagine i beat you up every day for 5 years

I think maybe I can clear up some things here.

1- PTSD has long been a thing, even if it was nameless. The Odyssey and many other historical works feature characters haunted by ghosts of their past and actions. While they didnt have a name for such things, it was a thing people acknowledged.

2- you often see "muh homosex isnt an illness anymore!" tossed around. True, it isnt, and there is a very simple reason: IT HAS NO NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THEIR LIVES. Being gay doesnt inheritly make your life shitty, all else being equal it just changes where you stick your willy and who you want to stick it in. This is the difference between "Disorder" and "statistically deviant from the mean".

Schizophrenia is a disorder because they have symptoms that can literally keep them from being members of society or can make them a hazard to themselves.

Homosexuality isnt a disorder though, because gay people can hold down jobs, pay their taxes one leg at a time, and hold conversations that dont spiral into delusions about the Cuban Moon bases sending signals to their tv.

You may find gayness to be "different"., and they are relatively rare (maybe 5% of the pop overall), but being gay itself doesnt pose significant challenges UNLESS society plays a good rousing game of "fuck you faggots" and makes life shitty on purpose.
>>

Does PTSD only affect normal people? Like would sociopaths (say Animal Mother) ever have been affected?

If you don't give a fuck about living/dying/killing people it seems like that's where a lot of the issues of PTSD come from. That and camaraderie with your fellow soldiers, cause then seeing your friends die haunts you.

If you're an edgelord who just enjoys killing I feel like you'd come out of a war whistling.
>>
>>32935784
even if i was, i'd be a right faggot
>>
>>32935790
PTSD can be thought of as a survival mechanism, so depending on the source they could be equally effected (speculating here). I havent seen much on that specifically though.
>>
>>32935790

No.

Post traumatic stress disorder really can just kind of hit anyone exposed to high intensity with stress environments in which the body's fight or flight response is triggered often, or for a long period of time.

I'm a physician specializing in trauma and about two in ten of my trauma patients develop PTSD down the road, and of those who do no, I have found the majority of them present with acute stress disorder. PTSDs symptoms are long term developments of acute anxiety and stress, and a development of habbits that involve activities or changes to the individuals day to day lives that affect them in a negative way.

The reason for in increased in PTSD diagnosis is a combination of factors: For one, advancements; that is, we've omitted several other mental illnesses or we now have a more stringent definition of them that precludes patients who fit better into the spectrum of trauma and stress related illnesses.
In addition I do believe that the actual number of PTSD patients is over reported. Physicians and Phycologists do not just hand out PTSD diagnosis, and unfortunately it seems that many use it as a grab for attention. This skews the public into thinking that more people have PTSD than there actually are. While it's true about 9% of Americans will have it at some point in their life and, at current, about 3-5m Americans have PTSD like symptoms, the discussion of its increase by way of population percentile is probably better left to sociology professionals.

Actually PTSD is caused by other shit too, anything traumatizing can cause it (but does not necessarily do so).

I have PTSD for other issues that have nothing to do with combat, but rather being abused behind closed doors.
>>
>>32931316
You nailed it.
When a vet comes home these days, he's surrounded by normies with whom he can't - and doesn't want - to talk to. Because normies don't get 'it.'

Society also thinks you're a freak. Vets are a small percentage of the population.

The wars of the US are so different from the norms of US life that it can be hard to adjust back. In the old days violence was more pervasive, if not never-ending. The Khan's guys didn't fly back to the World after a year of combat.

Lets keep this in mind when we read this post.

>Right. Suddenly there is a new "mental illness" called PTSD, and on the other hand homosexuality no longer is, and now trans-sexualism no longer is, what's next?

"suddenly being the 1980s? When being gay was still taboo? Also I dont see how this sentence fits in with the rest of your post.

>Shell Shock is a real war-related illness.
PTSD is made up by psychologists who want to make some good coin. With the backing of drug corporations, who aren't satisfied with the billions they already make, they advertised and lobbied, untill it was registered as a legal mental illness.

Shell shock is just a term for PTSD, before it was PTSD. in ww1 people thought the shock waves from arty were fucking peoples heads up. Also, PTSD has been documented for centuries (although not called PTSD).

>lso - the men in the west have become horribly feminized in the past 50 years, that adds up to the problem.

My grampa had PTSD from being in the Navy in WW2. (Diver). He recovered ships at Pearl, then went out and repaired battle-damaged ships at sea for the duration. Survived four ship sinkings. His last bit was in an ocean-going tug when the big typhoon hit after the war ended. They had to lash themselves in their racks and wait it out. He covered up the PTSD well but every once in awhile he would snap and be convinced of things like unexploded bombs in the backyard and act like he was a sleepwalker until he got talked back down to earth.

A cause of PTSD is brain trauma caused by over pressure. Which is why it didn't really become super common until WWI. And as protection against explosions has increased, the rate of occurence has as well, because those same people that were killed by shrapnel in WWI had a flak jacket in Vietnam, and could be closer to the explosion, i.e. experience more pressure trauma, without dying.
