My HD gun is a SR1911. Loaded with 230 grain golden sabers. I keep it loaded (8+1) with the thumb safety on.

Dude, I'm right there with you. I have a bunch of guns though so the shotgun sits in my safe mostly. Try practicing hip firing it. It's easier than most people think. In my place, most of the areas that I would need to be more accurate are areas that I can shoulder the shotgun and use the bead. But that being said, I use a double stack .45 with night sights and weapon light for HD.

Pretty much this. I have a short and narrow hallway between my master bedroom and living room, the safest way to get to the living room with a long arm is at the low ready. I personally would rather have the power of an AR or 12 guage over a handgun but small houses are where handguns shine.

I have long advocated the handgun for home defense. Unlike long arms, it can be operated easily and effectively with one hand while the other hand:
Turns lights on or off
dials emergency responders
carries dogs or children
opens or closes doors
secures the weapon of a subdued intruder
gives the wife a little smack whilst yelling "PULL YOURSELF TOGETHER!"

I'm sure you can think of more advantages

Sweeping a house alone is a joke. It's a squad activity. Unless there are children in other rooms you need to protect why would you need to leave your room if you and the wife are in the same place? Just keep the shotgun pointed at the door/ find an ambush spot. Cutting 4" off your barrel with an AR isn't going to magically make your tiny hallways easier to sweep. If you really have a reason to sweep the house every time you hear a noise either get a pistol with a light or just hip carry your shotgun around tight corners... You're not going to need to shoulder and aim down the sights if dindu is waiting right around the corner for you.

Honestly you kind of have to hold it down by your side. Put the action against your hip and half crouch so your head is in line with the barrel. Walk slow, keep socks on, maybe even soft padded slippers and you'll be able to get the jump on anyone. First round you might have to shoot off your hip, pump the gun as you bring it up to your shoulder. It's not ideal but it's really the only way I've found that works for me. It lowers my profile and let's me lead with the barrel anywhere I go. Just watch the stock so you don't smack it on a wall trying to be sneaky.
