I used my lever gat in 45 colt my first gig hunting trip here in Canada. I think they're much bigger to prepare for the winter but with 1 shit through the heart it ran maybe 50 feet before it died. 10/10 would go again

As someone who grew up with no family tradition of hunting, I can tell you something I think is kind of important:

No matter how squicked out you are about hunting, the instinct is within you.

Nature is continuous screaming murder, and hunting is getting in touch with nature.

When I first went hunting, I told my buddy (who knew what he was doing) that there was a real chance I might cry. How the fuck would i know, maybe I would have. It would have been awkward.

I didn't and the urge didn't even occur to me.

The only time that would be necessary is a situation like Red Dawn with the whole "never fire twice, they'll know where you are", and chances are that will never happen. Even if it does, we shouldn't be hoping for that because life is gonna suck.

Living creatures are never more violent and unpredictable than when their lives are threatened. If an animal survives a hit, don't fucking approach them. Shoot them. If you're not sure if they're dead, shoot them in the head.

If you're going to eat them, don't hit them in the body. Shoot em in the head. Don't eat brains unless you want to die from prion diseases (very very rare but 100% fatality)

I used to hunt a lot of hog outside of Dothan and Ozark. Used to make piglet sized tiger traps to lure the herd in. Then I'd unload on as many as I could. Sometimes I'd cage one of the piglets and keep it around to fatten up and eat.

I'm thinking next time I go visit family, I'm going to set up snare traps and bait them, then mark them so hunters won't trip them.

Incorrect, sure you can eat them. There are times of the year where it's not advisable though. The bigger hogs we get we will either take to sell, or clean and butcher ourselves, as opposed to dragging them to the edge of the field and letting them rot. It's slightly gamey, but it makes pretty good jerky.
