99% of the time when people say this, it's because they abuse their knives. Knives are for cutting, not prying and not beating.

If everyone uses knives for prying and beating, what kind of shitty manufacturer would make a knife that couldn't withstand that usage?

Actually, they do. Such a knife is known as a "hatchet."

can someone explain how there is a chunk missing from the spine of the esse3?

On a sidenote: Did esee replace all those knives free-of-charge? And you think that they would rethink the grind on that blade, since they all keep snapping right at the ground
>>
>>32905180
Good, sturdy knives like ESEE will survive batoning and prying if they need to be used that way. However, those should be treated as emergency uses. A sturdy blade with good design and good materials/manufacturing will survive occasional prying and beating, but if you beat and pry with it day in and day out, it will break.
>>
>>32905237
>can someone explain how there is a chunk missing from the spine of the esse3?
Someone beat the shit out of it. You have no idea how much stress that puts on steel. The knife may look fine, but the crystaline structure of the metal is under terrible strain. When the strain reaches a critical point, it breaks.
>On a sidenote: Did esee replace all those knives free-of-charge? And you think that they would rethink the grind on that blade, since they all keep snapping right at the ground
I think so. I just found the picture on some knife forum.
>>
>>32905180
just because some lazy idiot uses an item to do a job because that item was closer than the proper tool for the job doesn't mean a manufacturer should redesign the tool to take into account someone using it impoperly. as for batoning, if you are doing that it is either an emergency or you failed to properly prepare for the outing in the first place, usually the latter is the reason for the former.
>>
>>32905336
There is no need to ever baton a knife. Even if you are lost in a Siberian blizzard, you can still make a fire with a saw to cut the wood to length and a knife to shave or chop the wet bark off. If you can't find twigs for kindling, make feathersticks by SHAVING the wood, not beating it.

depends on the knife. wood froes have been around for at least 1000 years. it's not a new concept. granted this knife is probably hardened a bit much to be a dedicated froe, but I seriously doubt I'm ever going to snap it on a knot.
>>
>>32905802
No shit, Sherlock. Knives are for slicing, hatchets are for chopping, and crowbars are for prying (why you would need to pry anything in the woods is beyond me).
>>32905812
Axes, froes, and such are usually made of softer steel. Use the right tool for the job and the right steel for the tool.
>>
>>32905802
Don't worry there's probably some chinese meme hatchet that can do that and still won't break splitting wood.

>>32905860
as I said in my comment, it's probably too hard to be used in day in and day out as a froe, but the extra 5 HRC is not keeping my grandkids from splitting wood on camping trips with it.

I completely agree, I've owned a lot of knives over the past 10 years, and I've learned that no brand is perfect, any production knife is bound to have some QC issues. It's just a matter of how often and how the manufacturer deals with it.

>>
>>32905604
It is possible to baton wood with a knife, yes. But it's supposed to be a last ditch method, if all you have is a knife. Knives aren't meant for splitting wood, humanity invented axes for that. Batoning should only be done in emergencies, not for common woodsplitting. And if you're stuck in the woods without an axe you're probably doing something wrong.

because there are limitations, there is no "perfect" tool that can do everything or more things that are better suited to other more specialized tools.
Sure, you can use the axe/hatchet butt for hammering, but an actual hammer will have better design suited for that specific job.
It's true that having a jack-of-all-trade tool for the wilderness cuts down on shit you gotta carry, but to think a knife has to be designed to take such abuses and not lose anything in return is straight up naive.
