by my reckoning that's a non-refurb set in nearly flawless condition. Russian obviously. Presumably Izhmash. There is no place that is going to have these for sale regularly. You might find refurb or replacement sets that look similar but not the real thing. You would have to get lucky on a forum or gunbroker.

Or you could buy a whole Rguns kit, 1968 or 69, some of them were non-refurb. I have a 1969 that is in that good of condition, but the color of the wood isn't as pretty. They're on gunbroker, very expensive though.

I just posted for educational purposes. I have a similar set on my AKM variant. The handguards are unserialized, I was just curious on its origin. I figured it's, and previous pic related, were just NOS never fitted to a rifle, or replacement pieces?

Picking out furniture is fun and a challenge. There's such subtly and variation and certain sellers seem to have access to stockpiles that are unique looking compared to other people's.

That does not appear to be a replacement stock, I would definitely say it is an original issue Russian Izhmash stock, I'm not confident enough to say if it's refurbished or not though. Looks a bit on the dull side.

Russian AK wood except for very early AK(47) wood will be laminate. AK-74 wood is easy because only Russia made laminate AK-74 wood. With the exception of Ukrainian replacement stock sets which are a bit tricky to ID if you don't know what to look for. AKM laminate is a bit tougher because you also have countries like Poland making laminate AKM wood. After you've seen enough it becomes more obvious. Like learning a language.

New production AK-74 stock sets made in Ukraine. Very pretty and almost indistinguishable from the real thing except that they're a more matte finish whereas the real deal is usually fairly glossy shellac. 6+ years ago they were common and cheap. If you're familiar with RustyNut's SGL-31 I'm pretty sure it's what he has on there.

Can't knock the hustle

WASR vs. N-PAP: the neverending debate.

Let me see if I can sum up:
The WASR takes AK-standard furniture and has a chrome-lined barrel.

BUT the N-PAP generally has nicer fit and finish, although it needs Yugo-specific furniture and the barrel isn't chrome lined.

Right now on Atlantic the WASR is $70 higher than the N-PAP, and the N-PAP comes with a couple extra mags, mag pouch and sling (which would generally make you think the WASR is the "nicer" rifle).

HOWEVER as of just a couple-few years ago, it seems that the opposite was true--the N-PAP was a little pricier than the WASR and was regarded as a "good deal", netting you a nicer rifle for just a little bit more money.

These are just my impressions based on browsing forum archives and some videos.

The vityaz kits share a lot of the same parts. I have found the Bizon parts al la carte in the US but at a high price. Since they were not used/produced for a long time they are much more difficult to come across. The MMR deacts are the closet to a real kit I have seen. I have not seen one kit in 6 months of searching.

It's mostly builders/tinkerers taking Vityaz parts or making items from the ground up at this point.

There's a Fudd auction near me that somehow ended up with a bunch of slavshit mixed in with the shotguns and revolvers. I'm pretty sure they don't really know what they're selling, so I'm hoping I can pick up my first AK for cheap. I've been trying to figure out models and there's a few I can't figure out. It doesn't help that the auction list is wildly unspecific and the pictures are low resolution. Is there any way someone could throw me some info?

This one's listed as a Roanco 7.62x39. I'm assuming its a Norinco and the fudds are illiterate. I just can't tell which Norinco under all the plastic.
