With the capabilites of AP tank rounds today having armor thicker then 20mm is about useless. At this point the only heavily armored part should be the bottom to protect against IED's. The only real defense should be prevention against projectiles, not absorption.

Tanks, like warships in the past had 3 characteristics to design for: armor, speed, and range. But you only get to design for 2 of those and the third gets shafted.

We already have 65 ton tanks, and instead of jumping into ultraheavy tanks, we should redesign scout tanks. Make something for a 2 man crew, heavily armor only the crew compartment, and design for a light armor skin. Also give it a compact high-tech conventional engine, and APS. 105mm autoloader.

Now if you can get it under 16,000 lbs it'll be transportable by v-22 or a king stallion.

All flat surfaces like the Abrams but very steep glacis angles, no shot traps, 2 stroke turbocarged V12 diesel motor with the best fuel scavenging possible and a hefty displacement to move the beast.

Armor is all spaced, 2000mm for frontal armor tapering down to no less than 1500mm. Solid steel.

The bottom hull has a steep glacis too, all the way around. No cast or rolled steel, ALL steel armor is fucking FORGED. Even if a 1000 ton power hammer has to be built, all forged. Even the tracks must be forged. The bottom AND top of the tank will be no less than 1500mm AND have reactive armor. All armor has a spaced composite covering and ERA.

It'll have a 127mm or 155mm main gun, compatible with naval artillery rounds to simplify logistics. 30mm coax Apache style and two remote operated M2s on the top, as well as a manned 40mm belt fed grenade launcher. It'll have APS with 4 stingers strapped to it.

The gun will be able to elevate into an artillery mode for bombing the fuck out of anything in a 15 mile radius or up to 70 miles with LRLAP.

It will be insane.

Now for a light tank concept.

Virtually no armor, only effective up to 30mm from the front. It'll be almost all composite and have spaced ERA to act as ERA and spaced armor. Little protection from on the bottom or top, an all or nothing armor strategy.

The gun will be an experimental type for super high velocity shells less than 100mm, probably around 60 or 70mm. The projectiles will be very long so the mass is higher than you'd think, and the projectiles will be designed to "supercavitate" through the atmosphere via turning the atmosphere into plasma.

It'll have an M2 on a rear mounted turret.

Everything about the construction will be super light. Composite torsion bar suspension, composite tracks, etc. It'll basically be a test bed class.

Why not have the tanks remotely operated.
You could have an AA able tank for the controllers sitting on the back-line controlling several remote tanks to minimize input lag.
With the removal of the crew you could have either lighter, faster tanks or heavy tanks with compact size and super high durability.

Modular armament packages and a COTS standard FOV unfuck Army procurement and field superb systems which are common to NATO. I organize the new fleet in RSGs and hire retired Army Colonel Douglas McGregor to run the program.

I would like to see an “urban combat” variant of the Abrams, along the lines of the Russian BMPT.

I’d have right and left side remote weapon stations in the front hull, each with a Mk19 40mm grenade launcher and coaxial M240 .30cal machine gun.
