Some interesting trivia.

The US spacepen was designed to work in zero g environments and severe temperature differences. The Russian spacepen or also known as a regular pencil worked just like any other wood pencil. It also broke tiny chunks of graphite which could pose a serious threat to electronics and could short out computers. Plus the pencil was flammable.

The Russians were introduced the Spacepen, liked it so much that they purchased quantities of them for their own spaceprogram. The graphic wood pencil was discarded as a tool for spaceflight.

The spacepen is now a standard issue item for all spaceflight operations to the ISS.
