spent my tax return on a GP100 last year, although with the 6 inch barrel. definitely one of my favorite handguns, the SA pull is great. and if you're shooting .38 it feels like nothing at all. how much can you get it for?

Prepare to sell your blood for bullets if you don't reload. .38 special and .357 are both about .34 cents a round in bulk.

Heavy trigger pull, but you can buy springs for that. Poor double action trigger, but perfect SA.

SW will have a nicer double action pull out of the box. Ruger will shoot softer because of the extra weight. Both are of equal quality but I'd give the Ruger the edge on ruggedness.

I personally prefer Ruger because of the cylinder release design

It's not much, but I've shot >4k steel case rounds. Yes, I know, bimetallic bullet, hard primers, and all that bullshit. The ammo works fine for target shooting and probably would work fine for competition & defense, but there are better options for those.

I'd also worry about overpressure in 38 revolvers, but it shouldn't be an issue in a .357

This sounds right. I like the feel of my S&W, but I can tell by the weight the Rugers would definitely be a softer shooter.
Also check out the S&W 686 Plus (7 shot 357 Magnum). But if you enjoy shooting the Ruger best, go for it.

I've had a Ruger Security Six since about 1978, and it's been an amazing gun. You can't go wrong with a 4" stainless .357 revolver.
