AR15

.22 is a decent caliber round for a first gun. Depending on what gun you use, it's usually a nice light cartridge to fire! Not all too powerful though. Handguns are a better alt for a first gun. A Glock is light, most commonly in 9x19. If you want a defensive handgun .45 ACP is a more powerful round. After that I would suggest a rifle, but if you would prefer a rifle as a first, no ones stopping ya!

An AR15 is more complex gun. I've heard they are fun though!

Pistols: Ruger Mk IV is out, and addresses the biggest problems anyone had with the Mk III. Browning Buckmark is solid too.

Rifles: the Ruger 10/22 is the gold standard, despite being mediocre out of the box. It can be absolutely amazing with aftermarket parts, but gets expensive. Savage makes .22 rifles that run the gamut from cheap to inexpensive, and all of them are at least pretty good. I got my Savage 64G for under $150 and have never been unhappy with it.

If you're going .22 a ruger 10/22 is going to be your best bet, they're semi auto mag fed (10 rounds, might be a problem in some of the more retarded states) and there are literally fucktons of them so finding parts and after market accessories is easy. A 22lr is the best first gun there is. I got a Smith and Wesson m&p15/22 so I could use all my ar15 attachments with it. I really enjoy shooting it, but a cheaper option would be a 10/22.
