I live in a liberal city and I'm only a 15 minute walk away from a major liberal university and I haven't even seen any of these protests myself, only heard about them from people who happened to be in the area when they went down. Unless you purposely go looking for trouble, you probably won't find it. It's not like there's urban warfare or daily riots going on or anything. It's pretty much been business as usual.

That being said, you should always be prepared to defend yourself. I still carry daily, including to class.

I go to school in downtown St. Louis.

There have been protests every single day outside the Federal courthouse, which is literally across the street from my school, since the last of the Republican primaries. A small percentage have turned destructive, and an even smaller but still significant (considering we're over 200 protests since then in this one spot) have turned violent (7 fatalities due to riot violence total and over 300 hospitalizations over the last 5 months).

St. Louis as a whole isn't liberal but we do have very large legal immigrant/refugee, illegal immigrant, and muslim populations (with significant overlap in categories) and they're very vocal with their gibsmedats.

I was chased into the school by a group of Pro Sharia Law protestors armed with cudgels (cut off baseball bats), who then started trying to break the security glass front windows of the school until the armed security officer drew on them, on one occasion, and I'm positive they would have beaten and killed me if they'd managed to catch me.

My school, being a private Catholic university, is completely no-weapons-or-weaponlike-objects-allowed, which includes pepper spray, pocket knives, etc and it is enforced (metal detectors staffed by armed security at all entrances) under penalty of immediate and arbitrary expulsion.

As a result:

Cali fag here, i was actually at the milo event at cal poly the day before the Berkeley chimpout. There was some protesters but nothing close to what happened there. Two kids tried to lock arms and keep me from going down the walkway but they gave up after i shoved one pretty hard.

I live in a major city in California in a de facto no-issue county for concealed carry, although I thankfully have plans to get the hell out of this shit state within the next year and a half. I've seen riots near where I live and I've seen the aftermath of the more intense shit that happens downtown and in the projects. I used to just carry a little Victorinox for small everyday tasks like opening packages and stuff, but now I carry an assisted-opening folder with a much larger blade in addition to a stun gun. I've armed myself as best I can in my apartment, as well, because you never know what could happen. I came to this city for college from a more rural part of the state when I was a depressed gay 18 year old who bought the "everything is better for people like me in the big city" bullshit. The upside of experiencing urban life in a socialist-infested hellhole is that it's made me into a self-reliant American with strong appreciation for the Constitution.
