Is building my own AR worth it? Am I significantly saving anything?

if you already have a portion of home tools to put an AR together, then yes. If you have to buy all the tools and you might not be putting together anymore AR's, then most likely no. Best option at that point is to buy a lower assembled + upper assembled.

Depends on the value you place on gaining a better understanding of your weapon and what it is composed of/how it all fits together. As a pure red versus black cost analysis for one unit it won't make much difference. I think it's worth it just from an educational/pride in assembly standpoint if you've never done it before.

Yes. Get a lower locally and a premium rifle kit from PSA. The rifle kit will come with an assembled upper so you won't need any specialty tools other than a castle nut wrench. It'll be a tiny bit more than a Ruger/S&W after you buy mags and sights, but at least you won't have a Ruger/S&W
