Are there classes that I can take so I can learn how to shoot a rifle properly? I often read that in the muhreens, those that have never shot a gun before usually do better than those who have during qualification.
I'm not trying to pretend to be an operator or anything, I just want to be shooting the "right" way.

Yeah but we dry fire at barrel's with dots before we do for like 2 weeks. Plus have professional Marksman teach us.
You can't duplicate that experience on your own...
Then we have outstanding marksman drill that shit into our head, known as PMI's.
That said some guys were great shots beforehand. I was a pic related, any fundamental questions I'll try to answer for you.

I've literally never fired a gun before. If you handed me a rifle, I'd know in theory how to use it, just like how I know in theory how to drive a manual transmission car. I understand sight picture, but I don't know about things such as breath/trigger control, shooting stances, etc.

Rah.

What weapon do you fire? Keep in mind my knowledge is primarily with an m16 or m4 platform.

OK, whatever.

M16a4 clone. My upper is going to arrive soon. I can't afford an optic yet so it will be with the standard sights.

Not the other anon, but something that helped me with the m16 is nose to charging handle, helped keep correct eye alignment, also, finding a weight that ways about as much as your rifle.
Lift that, and that's about how much force you need to use to pull the weapon against your shoulder.

Rest easy, anon. Read the user's manual, practice at home unloaded, then at the range. Read the user's guide. You'll be fine.

Classes at Gunsite or Thunder Ranch can come later.

You can cope with a simple sight or not a Marksman. My Nikon is gold.
Fundamentals. Shoulder, sight picture. 4 saftefty rules and unnoficial 5th.
