Alright /k/, looking to buy my first firearm. Grew up shooting, but never had a comfy range nearby after moving away. (At virginia tech now and there's a super comfy range not even 10 minutes away.)

I'm looking for a long range bolt action for precision shooting. Brief research has lead me to think I'd like to get a model 700 sps tac aac-sd in .308 due to the model 700's reputation, price range, "upgradeability," and, specifically for the aacsd, the immediate ability to throw a supressor on it.

I haven't yet begun looking at optics as I know that's a whole other can of worms, but I'd like to hear what you bastards might have to say on the topic.

Basic requirements:
Sub-$700 price
1moa out of the box
Threaded barrel (can be done by gunsmith, i know)

Suggestions on optics/supressors/triggers and other goods also welcome. I was most likely going to look at leupold for optics (though they're probably out of my price range and a timney trigger for the first upgrade.

Also, I believe I heard something at some point that Remington was bought by another company and the quality went to shit afterwards...any truth to that?

>Also, I believe I heard something at some point that Remington was bought by another company and the quality went to shit afterwards...any truth to that?

Yes, their quality has been sorely lacking in recent years. The got bought out by the same company that got marlin as well

Any AR-15 will do that out to 700 yards for less per shot than basic 308 ball.
>>
cont >>32835156
If you do your part, that is, and you are probably not yet capable of it. However, that just makes it a good chance to learn.
With 223/556 you can push to 700 yards with skill, and you can switch to something like 6.5 Grendel for even better performance. In fact, you could build a 6.5 Grendel (24cpr ball, no shit) AR-15 with some bottom bitch glass for less than $700.

>>
>>32835156
I appreciate it and understand that ARs can do that, but I'd like to eventually move up to 1000m shooting so I'm fairly certain what I posted is closer to what I'm looking for in the long run. I'll eventually build an AR, but for now I'd like to get a bolt action.

Sigh, bring flags and ID to /k/
>>
>>32835457
Remington 700 is more suited to rusting away to nothing than 1000 yard shooting, and no way in fuck is it more suited than a 6.5 Grendel.

In fact, go Google "6.5 Grendel 1000 yard". Grendel is a better 1000 yard cartridge than 308.

Eventual long range. Is that better?

Get a Savage and you won't need to change the trigger. You'll need to get the barrel threaded but that's not too big of a deal.

Also Howa is now selling barreled actions with threaded barrels. Howas are great.
>>
>>32835896
>Savage 10
Most of those on Gunbroker are already threaded to 5/8x24

If you go with a bolt gun get .243, 7mm-08, or 6.5 Creedmoor, not 308.
>>
>>32836146
Going to look into 6.5CM a bit more today based on all of this. The one article I read comparing .308 to 6.5CM has me pretty interested.
>>
>>32836187
6.5 CM to 6.5 Grendel is like 30-06 to 308: You just don't gain anything realistic with the bigger cartridge, and an AR-15 will be at least as good as any given bolt gun.
>>
>>32835659
Savage is more accurate out of the box
>>
>>32836596
Why does every thread on /k/ just end up being "just get an ar"? OP wants a bolt gun
>>
>>32838088

OP is an idiot who doesn't know what he wants. He'll be getting an AR later and never shooting his bolt gun, so just get it over with now.
>>
>>32838088
Do you know why everyone is tired of the AR? It's because it's literally the best at every role that doesn't necessitate a folding stock.

OP is a college poorfag with access to a 50 yard range but wants a gun that can push out to 1000 yards. You'll find that 6.5 Grendel is the only cheap 1000 yard ammo at under 25cpr per shot, and an AR-15 is a great way to put that to use.
>>32835084
OP: Molot also offers a 6.5 Grendel AK, but it's not going to do 1 MOA on a good day in the hands of a skilled shooter, it's more expensive, and the magazines are unobtanium.

For what it's worth: An AK-74 would also be an excellent choice, but you're fucked in bullet selection and the platform limits your potential.
Unfortunately your budget doesn't really allow for anything else semi-auto and can barely fit an AR with glass, and bolt guns at 50 yards suck.
>>
>>32835903
No they aren't.
>>
>>32838088
cont >>32838395

It's even the best battle rifle. Sorry, but an AR-10 will outshoot a SCAR 17S shooter for shooter at a fifth the price, and they'll both destroy an M1A, FAL, or PTR. The difference is a FAL* and PTR can have a folding stock.
>>
>>32836596
.260 Rem to 6.5 CM is closer to 30-06 to .308 than 6.5 Grendel.

Dude, we get that you are hyped about your new 6.5 Grendel AR, but you are all over the place. 6.5 CM pushes heavier bullets faster. That's just the reality of superior case capacity. Grendel is still an intermediate cartridge and has limitations. Wider cartridges don't play nice with AR-15 bolts either.

I live in PA where semi auto hunting is banned and I keep a sizeable stash of .30-06. That's it.

>You'll find that 6.5 Grendel is the only cheap 1000 yard ammo at under 25cpr per shot
Lets not pretend hes going to be using wolf steel case at anywhere near 1000 yards. The match ammo costs the same as any other caliber. If op doesnt reload, his best option is .308 based on price of practice ammo alone.
>>
>>32838559
more referring to not grendel. but yeah, jap sucks too.

If you put one together yourself with a high quality trigger, barrel, and handguard you might be able to pull it off by going cheap on everything else, if you dont include the scope.

>Let's not pretend his average shot is going to be anywhere near 1000 yards through the life of the firearm.
Wolf is shit for anything other than plinking at a couple hundred yards or less. Its even worse for precision shooting practice. If hes almost never going to shoot past a few hundred yards, hes better off with a 5.56 rifle anyway.

>That is generally how you put together a good AR, anon.
Then feel free to post a build under $700 because those three parts alone will usually run about $600. Youve still got the upper and lower, upper and lower assemblies, and bcg.
>>
>>32839041
>If hes almost never going to shoot past a few hundred yards, hes better off with a 5.56 rifle anyway.
Agreed, with the caveat that 1000 yards is not within the scope of your expectation. When you're looking at 300-500 yard average with 1000 common 6.5 Grendel is pretty tits.
Also, turns out the PGC just today legalized semi autos for durr with a five round limit. Looks like that thuddy is retiring.
