Should I buy a Mosin or an SKS or something else for my first rifle? I've got an 870 I use for hunting and I'm poor as shit.

SKS is fine for hunting I guess
Why not a sporterized 7mm or 7.65 contract mauser. They go for 200-400 bucks and are quite nice.

7.62x39? son you'll blow the dur in half lol

No. You should learn basic money management, save up, and buy something better than a mosin or an SKS
I was going to do that too, bought an AR instead. Now is not a good time to get a Mosin or SKS, the soviet Milsurp market is dead. Now is the best time to get an AR however. they are cheap as fuck and you can get a good one for only a few hundred more than an SKS

>Should I buy a Mosin or an SKS
Is it 2011 or earlier? Then no.
If you want a bolt gun in a full-power cartridge, You can get a Savage Axis or Ruger American for a little more than good-condition Mosins go for now.
Beat-to-shit ChiCom SKSs go for $350 these days. In good condition they're anywhere from $400-$700 depending on country of origin and condition. You can get a decent entry-level AR for $500. A decent entry-level AK (WASR or NPAP) for ~$600.
And, for real, right now it might be smart to just sit on your money and save. Arsenal is deliberately crashing the AK market with their now fixed-stock SLR at $850 which is gonna drop the price of American-made and kit-built AKs below that price point, which should also lower the entry-level stuff.
And AR prices have been dropping for years. The bubble popped.

Shiggily du-wop. Get the SKS.

Mosin's aren't a good "budget gun" anymore. The only point in getting one these days is if you happen to actually like them. You can get something better for the same price/cheaper. Hell, you can find 308 Spanish Mausers for under $250. Good luck finding any Mosin that cheap these days and 308 is much more widely available.

Fuck all the haters. Get the mosin. Embrace the memes.

Don't get a Mosin for a first gun. Get a 10/22, they're cheaper and have no recoil so you don't develop a flinch. It's also cheaper to feed a 10/22.
