As far as hunting goes, check with your provincial regulations for big game restrictions. Some provinces won't let you hunt big game with anything less than .23 caliber, making anything in .223/5.56 illegal.

Mini-30 will work ok, but there's only 5rd magazines available.

I'd suggest a Vz58 instead, it's non-restricted and with a magwell adapter you can use 10 round pistol magazines. Pic related is a pistol variant with a 30r mag but you get the idea.

The Mini-30 can absolutely handle surplus and cheap shit ammo, just replace your hammer spring if it acts up.
