It's absolutely true. People think carrying anything other than a Glock 43 or Shield is near impossible. Doing something like AIWB and finding the right holster can make you get away with carrying something like a P320 Compact easily. You just have to put forth the effort but most people like instant gratification, and carrying a Shield in an IWB Alien Gear holster is perfect for that.

Corso Inc sells baseplates and spring kits on magguts dot com that increase the factory mag capacity by 2. I carry 10+1 in my shield and still don't worry about too much bulk. I've also put about 600 rounds through them so far with zero feed issues. Capacity problem solved.
