Let's talk about 22lr firearms, /k/
Suspend disbelief for a moment. Say you were going into SHTF and knew you would have to be doing a whole lot of shooting. Also say you had an unlimited supply of 22lr, and no other ammo of any kind.
What guns would you be best suited with? I realize 10/22s are pretty much the peanut butter and jelly of this entire category, but is there anything else out there worth using over it? How about worthwhile mods, stocks, or whatever else?
Should pistols even be considered?

Not really, the only .22 better than a 10/22 is a more expensive custom built 10/22
>>32817352
I love .22 but your thread is fay.Why not just make a rimfire genral instead?

What sorts of custom builds might one make for a 10/22 to make it more effective than a $200 one you'd buy at any lgs?
>>32817431
Because I didn't want to talk about rimfire in general, I wanted to talk about 22 specifically.
10/22 takedown with a normal barrel and internally suppressed barrel

We can just make this RFG.
>>32817352
Under the conditions you outline, I would probably want a 10/22 Takedown with an integrally suppressed barrel and an improvised bolt lock for single shots. Stock would probably be irrelevant to accuracy because of the takedown mechanism, so I'd pick something synthetic, strong and comfortable. Maybe the Magpul Hunter X-22.
If I were to pick one of mine, it would be the Thompson Machine Operative B CZ.

How does an internally suppressed barrel work? Any similar restrictions to an actual suppressor?

what are the bolt action ones on the right?
>>32817659
Manufacturers have different designs, but generally the overall module length is roughly 16" to avoid requiring manufacture of a short barreled rifle, the actual rifled barrel portion is shorter than that (perhaps 8-12"), is ported into a large chamber near the breech end, and a series of baffles are contained between the end of the rifled barrel and the muzzle end of the unit.
Most manufacturers follow the same general design. The entire integrally suppressed barrel unit is treated as a suppressor, but the host firearm is not under NFA purview.

What lever action is that?
Considering one in .22 for first gun
>>32817869
Winchester 9422. It's one of my favorites, hundreds of rabbits kilt with it. Very fun and satisfying for off-hand plinking, and it's surprisingly accurate. Most of the hunting I did was with CCI CB caps, which are quiet enough not to need hearing protection, but still powerful enough to take small game.

Thanks for the info. How hard would you advise against getting a cheap henry carbine and eventually doing this to it?
>>32818923
I wouldn't advise against doing that. I wanted to do that to my 9422 but didn't want to wreck it because I'm not sure they're high polish blued anymore. If you look at the barrels here, you can see that the ~2004 blued 9422's barrel is not polished before bluing where the ~1990 Boy Scout 9422's barrel is nice and shiny. I'm not sure, but I think the new production 9422s are not polished at all before bluing, so I wouldn't care about modification.
Something like new production, or a Henry, that sounds like a great idea to cut and thread to me, as long as you can still see the sights over the suppressor (they're very low).

10/22 and American 180

You still have the Silencer stamp, but not the SBR stamp. This also means you don't have to file a 5320.20 to go interstate.

american 180 makes dinky rimfire into a terrifying weapon. I wish I had bought one for $1200 back in 1998
