I'll have to look up your laws but if they're anything like Commiefornia laws, you won't be able to get anything for 100$

For home defense you have to look at this as an investment, you may have to drop 300-500 dollars to start.

For people like you who live in a commie state, you havr to consider the cost for background checks, taxes on weapons and ammo etc.

And you're gonna want a handgun for your first gun, maybe in 9mm if you're a new gun owner or if not maybe something with more heft like a .357 or .45

Handgun for a starter is a bad idea. First, he's in NY so we're talking 6 month wait for a permit. Second, rifles are much safer to learn on. It's a lot harder to accidently cap yourself with a long gun.
