What about SHTF luxury items?

In a scenario like The Stand where some sort of super flu wipes out almost everyone, the survivors would not have to worry about food or supplies for years and will have ample time to become sufficient before worrying about starvation. But what about the luxury items that can expire or run out? Paint, ink, glue, clay, that sort of thing. Are there any infographics on things like that? Crash courses in bee keeping or maple syrup harvesting?

What about some sort of hardened SSD full of music and videos for when power is restored and computers can be made to work for at least a little while? Without the ability to manufacture parts, but with an effectively inexhaustible surplus of existing parts, how long would it be before properly stored computer components become unusable?
>>
>>32796575
Honestly although it sounds nice, I'm not going to go out of my way to obtain these things, my priority is staying alive. When shit finally slightly less hits the fan maybe I'll have a look for them.

Bees however, bees are amazing.
>>
>>
>>32796646
That's why I'm thinking more of a The Stand type scenario specifically. There is 0 issue with staying alive. Food and supplies to scavenge everywhere, more than enough that you can't possibly run out before setting up more long term things like farms. You wouldn't even have to set up farms, you just need to go where one already exists and replant it. With the right people and mindset, it would take only weeks to be set up for the rest of your life, and then the boredom sets in.

Paper, ink, paint, and clay would seem to be the simplest luxury/entertainment things to make, but I only have vague ideas about all of them.
>>
>>32797437
paper isn't hard to make and you can "make" ink by scraping the ink layer off of magazines and photographs with a razorblade making a kind of water color

as for entertainment i'd keep a portable HD with lots of books, movies and music but mostly books.

disregarding the zombies or insane super flu thing the last time i had to rely on my pack out i was heading to start of a hiking trail and the weather turned to fuck so i had to sit in my truck for several hours to let it tone down
>>

Toilet paper.
>>
>>32797437
Where would you like me to start with the issues I have with this
>>
>>32796718
a problem of this, the compost heap. people don't realize how much that stuff can smell, 10 fold when you stir it up
>>
>>32797437
>Food and supplies to scavenge everywhere.
If you are thinking about stockpiling ink and shit good and supplies won't be everywhere.
>Setting up more long term things like a farm.
I don't know if you have ever farmed but you don't just throw some seeds down. Not to mention the fact that you could be waiting a couple of MONTHS before you even get any sort of return from it.
>>
>>32798291
I realised thanks to my phone this made me sound like I had been picking batteries, what I meant to say was that if SHTF for real to the point where you are stockpiling ink, goods and supplies won't be easily accessible
>>
>>32796575
>What about SHTF luxury items?

antibiotics, asthma meds, anti histamines, abortifacients, epinephrine, NSAIDs, beta blockers...

my single most useful SHTF skill is being able to make penicillin.
>>
I seriously doubt that in a shtf situation, the first thing people loot will be oil paints.

Chocolate, cigarettes, liquor, pussy. Vices...people love their vices.
>>
>>32798348
Ditto.
I spent a year living with dirty stinking hippies when I was a teenager and I learned how to make so much shit out of dirt, water, and leaves.
It's a shame most people don't care to.
>>
>>32798619
Well like what? I'm interested now
>>
>>32798720
Like someone else said, stuff like abortifacients would be in demand.
Wild carrot aka Queen Anne's Lace grows fucking everywhere, and as long as you have gloves is easy to harvest. The seeds are a very effective birth control, outside of occasional constipation.

Ginger is easy to grow and is magic for indigestion and morning sickness.

You can grind black walnut hulls and garlic into a paste with some water and use it to treat stuff like athletes foot.

A chamomile salve or poultice can help a lot with skin irritation like eczema or chickenpox.

Willowbark or willowleaf tea can serve as a substitute for aspirin in a pinch. Just don't try to concentrate it or you'll make yourself sick.

A lot of what we use daily came about due to traditional/folk medicines being refined and their active components isolated and synthesized.
I'm not a hippie or 'prepper' at all, but I don't use much off the shelf anymore. A weekend in the woods and a few hours of preparation/preservation usually has me set for a couple months.

Plant dyes came first. Paper appeared much later.

>What about SHTF luxury items?

The Luxury in SHTF is to have a real chance at first to deal with yourself, and then to Find Others to deal with Them.

Honestly the real luxury in SHTF is to find like minded people and to form a trusty network with them.

And then you can have your go with plant based dyes, or medicine, or engineering, or economics, or politics, or whatever in your society which doesn't get you killed.

I did read through it.

I'm not a biochemist (only well versed in it due to practical job description), however I think this (if successful) may lead to something that is essentially "sulfa".

Quite a lot of people out there are sensitized or even allergic to sulfa.

I suddenly think this is WW2 era level of antibiotics.

If you have been exposed to modern stuff at some point, this may not really work on top of that.

Well what do I know.

Personally I have pounds of antibiotics vacuum packed under a nitrogen blanket that have an expected shelf life of over 50 years so I don't actually give a fuck. I'm pre3pared for what is coming here in the US. Once Chine destabilizes our fiat currency with the help of Mexico, Iran, the Emirates and the EU, it's going to be a real party here. look at what Venezuela is going through then add 35 million completely Feral violent life long welfare dependents to that mix for an idea of how fucked up things will be.

I know prepper threads on /k/ are for shits and giggles but the day is coming and fast with President Trump getting back stabbed by his own party as he tries to make America grat again. FUcking marxist socialists have infected to much of our power structure to ever weed them out.

>Unless someone can give me an actual scenario where food and water would be easily accessible, but everything gone to shit and you need ink then this whole thing is pants on head retarded.
It is pants on head retarded. As a matter of fact almost all SHTF scenarios are pants on head retarded or unlikely to the point of being irrelevant.

Zombies are pants on head retarded too, doesn't stop people from discussing it.

So... Like normal life then, you know you get fed and drink and then work out what the fuck to do with the rest of your time.

Zombies however... They are retarded.

>>32808060
People talk about what will replace currency after SHTF. At first it will be a clean water source then food and then warm clothes and shelter but very quickly antibiotics and other medical supplies will become the new gold. Spending $100 on bulk fish and farm grade antibiotics which are the same exact compounds humans use ( do your due diligence faggots) and then using the vacuum set up all good preppers have seal it under a nitrogen blanket in smallish quantities and you have something everyone will desperately need. Think bribing those who assume power or think about how desperate fathers and mothers will be when their precious rugrats get sick. Once you start thinking like a real prepper it becomes very cheap top be a king after SHTF.

I've been prepping all of my life cause my father was a prepper. The stories he was told growing up about the great depression in the USA were enough for him to keep about a year of home canned goods and daily necessaries stored. None of us know about our entire fucking nation either on the verge of going huingry our simply starving. It's like it never happened.
It's only in the last 80 years that all of us stopped having a very well stocked pantry in our homes and only in the last 10 to 15 years has the MSM (mostly socialists media) started demonized preppers.
We have a very large pantry of home grown and home canned goods that rotates as we use them, it's not wizardry it just takes practice. We have 18 months of dry goods on hand that we have bought at clearance prices when the opportunity presents itself. It;snot like we don't use them anyway.
Not everyone has the time or even he room for all the things we have but I swear...if every mother fucker here doesn't have six months worth of long shelf life foods and hygiene products they are full fucking potato in my book. Add a small library of things people need to learn if it all comes tumbling down and other shit for entertainment value cause at first there will be massive amounts of time with nothing to do but wait for the low IQ masses to starve to death.

>are you just going to hit and run my meager contribution.

No, with all respect to one's (your) efforts. However I am not good with something simply claimed to be beneficial in terms of general health. This is an issue that needs much more than just an "infomercial", and I believe you will agree with me here.

>I have pounds of antibiotics vacuum packed under a nitrogen blanket that have an expected shelf life of over 50 years

I believe all of those were readily manufactured, prepared and packed by modern pharma companies. Which is of course a very good thing. What you did was to take those packages, placed them in a barrel and replaced the natural atmosphere in the barrel with a bottled nitrogen. Which is good.

BTW, Argon would have been even better inert gas.

>>32807829
>It's a rough purification of natural penicillin. Absolutely nothing to do with or even similar to sulfa drugs.

Are you really aware what you are now talking about? Especially these modern days when every other human being has been exposed to antibiotics at least once if not more?

Come on, you can't seriously promise anything. Seriously.
>>
>>32808498
>never arm ppl you don't trust with your life.
Now that is thinking like a man who might live a few extra years if SHTF. You favorite neighbor will kill you to feed his hungry children. remember that. Maybe after the 95% of our population that is going to die off is gone you can start making alliances.

One thing no one here ever posts about is the ethics of survival in a society with out rule of law. We are spoiled in the USA, for the most part. The threat of imprisonment keeps the vast majority of us from just doing whatever we want. SHTF is like the purge movies. It's that simple. What happens to the average person when there is no 911 and they are just fucking starving, when their children haven't eaten in three days.

People need to decide what lengths they will go to now when they can do it in a calm place. I know people who have stopped prepping because they decided they just couldn't kill other people to protect their beans and bandaides. Fucking retards as far as I'm concerned but what ever.
>>

Why are you trading without a sniper in an overwatch position? They might rob you regardless of what you're trading. Destroying stuff is just a dick move, beginning, middle, end.
>>
>>32808580
>I believe you will agree with me here.
I always agree with you, you are one of my favorite trips and I wish we could have been friends but that's my fault entirely
My method is bagging up what ever dry goods I'm going to vacuum seal and placing them under a nitrogen blanket for a few in a room that is as moisture free as I can provide. Shaking the contents of those bags every now and then for a few days and then vacuum sealing them under that same blanket of inert gas. I have eaten homemade dehydrated foods over 30 years old processed this and they were just fine. With these modern vacuum packing systems I would bet properly dehydrated foods can be tasty and safe to consume for a century.
>BTW, Argon would have been even better inert gas.
I'm going to look into that since you mentioned it.
The nitrogen works fine for me but for someone just starting out they can go with argon if they prefer. Is there a noticeable price difference in the gasses by he cubic foot?

Clay's not too hard to get depending on your area ( can find it along rivers, or if it's in the soil you can wash the clay particles (finer than silt and sand) out of the soil (the soil bellow the organic layer that is). There is a whole art to bee keeping (a wonderful hobby that generally leads to a long life), where as maple tapping is all about knowing when the sap starts to flow in early spring.

I think Argon is more expensive.

A dried Nitrogen (N2) though will not absorb that eagerly atmospheric moisture either.

Nitrogen is in use to blanket very moisture sensitive materials like polyurethane constituents (diols and especially isocyanates) in the plastics industry, so it should be quite fine gas for protecting delicate goods from atmosphere.
