Hey what is a good blade steel that has good edge retention but isn't as expensive as S35vn, I've been looking but can't find anything.

Don't sperg out so much about the material your knife is made from.

unless you are dealing with customs, it doesn't matter. unless something is seriously wrong with the temper, you will never be able to tell the difference in use of x vs y similarly high carbide volume steels (other than corrosion resistance). this has been proven over and over again. it's all in your mind. it takes dedicated and as controlled as possible testing to determine minuscule differences.

choose one and only one

Deez nuts. I can tell the difference between my elmax stuff and my s30v stuff
None of that grinder monkey steel bullshit. All of those fancy stainless steels that cost lodesamoney.png per billet are not worth your money. I prefer to use carbon steels such as 1095,W2,toolsteel,O1,1085 when I forge my knives and axes(and other edged tools) the edge tends to last much longer and can be honed much easier than any basterdizded "steels"..... the only other thing in iron that should be there is carbon.
Pic related. Based carbon steel toollery

>W2,toolsteel,O1
wut
>>32777156
Oops I forgot their the same thing. Moral of the story, they've got a reliable amount of carbon
W is for water quench and the O is for Oil that's what puts them apart for me. They me be the same, however their quenching properties can be vastly different
>>32777398
the fact that its quenched at all means its wrong
a very long, very slow cooling process is the best for a given heat treat.
>>32777414
what?
>>32777414
A quench is only bad when you dont normalize your work after smacking on it with a heavy hammer, the best tempers you can get are via EvenHeat kilns, but I have a blacksmithing bias. Clearly not a fan of stock removal only knives.

Exactly. The steel rarely fucking matters. I sold knives for years and I've collected tons of knives, some worth $5, some worth $500. And if you're using them for what they are meant as, a tool, then the steal will never really matter. Would you drop $300 on a hammer? Then never use it for risk of it getting dented or rusted? I rotate my knives around every month and my $30 Kershaw works just as well as my $100 benchmade. You can claim that you can tell the difference but it doesn't really matter. Knives are tools. Use them as such.

Also the air cool only applies to the D2 mentioned, I don't know any other air cooled steels besides that
>>32777414
This is wrong for the overwhelming majority of martensitic steels.

Get some thing from Gerber, you'll love it.
