You know, I'm actually impressed by the progress that the Chinese have made on their tanks, starting from mere copies of soviet designs to the Type 99 : a true modern MBT with hunter-killer ability, FCS, thermal sights, and (to my knowledge), the first mass-produced tank equipped from the start with a laser warning receiver AND an active laser defense system.

Its armor and its gun may not be as good as their western counterparts, I don't know. But on the technological aspect, it is a leap forward for China that I didn't know they were capable of.

See the battle of Hainan island, where the KMT navy had armor piercing shells that went through the communist junk without exploding, thus the KMT navy got their ass handed to them. Heck you can see a similar concept in warships today as most antiship missile suffer from severe overpenetration problems.
