Nothing is wrong with this gun.
The older ones are better
>>
What calibre?
>>
>>32768829
30-30
>>32768807
Twice I've been talked out of it by a gunshop employee but I still want one. Is all the Remlin shit a meme?
>>
>>32768862
The company isn't what it used to be. Their quality control has been on a decline for quite some time.
>>
>>32768862
How about this story for you.

My dad had a old school one. Gave it to my cousin. Missed it. Bought a new one.

Year later he traded it for the old one
>>
>>32768896
I've never had an old one so maybe it wouldn't make a difference to me? Is ignorance bliss? This will be my first levergun if I get it.
>>
>>32768760
Ok... I'll try to stop ya. It's a fudd gun. Can't really make fun of ya though...I too have fudd guns. Still... It's a 30-30...And a 30-30 will get the job done...Fuck...I'm not doing a good job talking you out of it...

Whatcha gonna pay for it anon?

430 after taxes.
>>
>>32768760

buy something other than .30-30
Get .357 mag, .44 mag, or .45-70

>muh durr gun
all of those rounds will stop a deer, don't buy a dumb caliber
>>
>>32768950
Wow, good deal.
>>
>>32768760
Think of what else you could buy with the money. Doesn't even have to be other guns. Literally anything else you could do with 430. Done? If you still want it after that you're hopeless.
>>
>>32768957
>Oh no my readily available common cheap round is dumb becuase i have an opinion
Fuck off really. Jerking off to calibers is just fucking annoying

Hornady solved the round nose issue of 3030 years ago.

And 3030 has dropped deer for over a century.
>>
>>32768957
In defense to op, 30-30 is the best scenario for him to find ammo at anyplace that has ammo. 45-70 rocks...Can't argue with ya. 357 mag is nice out of a 16 inch barrel but I would feel better with a 30-30. 44 mag lever guns have a long history of not being that accurate. 35 remington lobs heavy bullets better than a 30-30 but no point when you got a 45-70. 30-30 will do op well.
>>
Do 357 or 45-70 instead of 30-30. If you already got a 44 mag then do that

Marlin is fine now; just get a modern production, not '10-'14

If you mount a scope, make sure you remove the plugs with an appropriately sized screwdriver, because the metal is soft as fuck and the plugs are tight, so you'll strip the fuck out of them if there is any play whatsoever and have to do crazy things to remove them.

I'm set to inherit my greatgrandpa's 99. Love that gun, but shit head who put the scope on at the local hardwareshop in 1958 drilled the rear reciever scope holes weird, so scope is trash. (which is a shame because I really like the fine crosshair 4 power, 4x32mm I think)

Wonderful gun and 300sav is a solid cartridge for game up to 500lbs.

even if its absolutely wretched we'd recommend it to laugh at you, or at least I would.

But lever guns are always good and .45-70 is a bitch to find and expensive. 30-30 isn't exactly the best ballistically but modern bullets and some handloading magic make it completely acceptable within 150-300 yards

>>
>>32768862
There is a metric fuckton of .30-30 lever guns out there, including 94 repro's.
There is never any good reason to buy a new .30-30 when you can buy one used for pennies on the dollar.
It was the most popular caliber for hunting until high power bolt guns became cheap and 7.62x39 became a thing in the US
>>
>>32770561
Too bad Rossi can't seem to fucking make guns at a decent rate or keep their dealers stocked.
>>
>>32770576
>tfw they discontinued their 45-70 model
Literally a garbage tier company for garbage tier retards.
>>
>>32770571
Fuck outta here freedom group, you want quality you buy Win or Henry. You want cheap and decent you buy Rossi. You want cheap overpriced garbage, Marlin circa 2009 to right the fuck now is your ticket
>>
>>32770584
They picked up a .454 casull line that's why

>>32770576
I'll second this actually, I don't see them often in stores, at least big box ones. Smaller ones listed as dealers never have any in stock, but now and then I'll stroll into a new store with tons of them on the rack
>>
>>32770571
I own a PTR too if you want to fite me
>>
>>32770594
I'm not debating Winchester or Henry (curses upon them for never making a gate loading model) are low quality or not worth it but literally anyone will tell you that as long as you don't pick up a post 1960 and pre JM stamp Marlin you are getting a gun better than Rossi.

Whether the price is worth it is irrelevant as OP stated he is getting it for the equivalent of a Rossi. If you can get slightly better for the same price you go for it.

>>32770606
PTRs are solid
>>
>>32770604
>They picked up a .454 casull line that's why
not listed in their 2017 catalog, it's dead too.

Like I said, garbage company.
>>
>>32770612

>>
>>32770367
>>32769446
I came into possession of a Savage 99 a few years ago and never got to fire the damn thing on account of it being in .250 Savage. I ended up selling it for 400 to some ancient looking dude at a gunshow and then using the money to buy a really nice P1. If it had been in any other caliber I would have kept it, it's a really neat gun.

As for OP, I had an old 336 that had beloned to an uncle of mine, not sure which model becasue I've never seen the one I had anywhere, it was wood and blued but had a long barrel and short mag tube. Kicked like a mule but was reliable and accurate.
>>
>>32770626
It means it was made before the nonsense with freedom group buying out Marlin and fucking everything up for a couple years. I'd get it ASAP, good price for it.

>>32770637
Should have hand loaded for it becasue .250 is an insane caliber but I can understand not having the time or patience for that.
>>
>>32770653
>I'd get it ASAP, good price for it.
Trying to. It's a 2 hour drive for me and it's first come first serve. Trying to plan a time with the seller now.
>>
>tfw just got my 336 back together after it spent years pulled apart because I was a retard

Now I need a bluing pen. OP, never take it apart. I took this thing apart like a week after i bought it 4 years ago and just now got it back together.
>>
>>32770877
I've taken apart like 4 for my fudd uncles, do you just not have kroil and a set of punches/ gunsmithing screwbits?
>>
>>32770974
Nope.

My only real issue was getting the rear barrel band back on. I just couldn't get the screw in far enough for the threads to catch. Finally pounded it in with a rubber mallet last night and the threads went in. I'm pretty excited because i bought it so long ago and it's really a beautiful gun. 1979 manufactur i think, and looks brand new save for a bit of pitting on the barrel and magazine. Like the previous owner put it away with some rain drops on it.
>>
>>32768950
Check the manufacturing date. If 2015 or later should be good to go
>>
>>32769027
Especially in thick woods where he will no be able to see past 100 yards anyway
>>
>>32769371
Same goes for remmington 700s
>>
>>32768760
I have a Marlin 336 BL and I'm pretty happy with it. My major suggestion is give the gun a good once over to make sure you didn't get a remlin. Bad tooling marks, etc. It has a capacity of six but you're going to have a hell of a time fitting that sixth round in the tube.

You might want to look into a Model KS-336 Kwik-Site if you're not going to put a picatinny rail on it. It's an over-under so you can switch between scope or irons.
>>
>>32768760
>>32768862

I cant speak for the new production but my 336A is one of my favorite guns. (30-30) You cant go wrong with the ammo price and nothing drops a deer better in thick brush then this round. Definately a nice brush gun.
>>
>>32768760

>>
>>32768760
>levergun that isn't box mag fed
No.
Just no.
It's like you want an L-85 without any of the benefits.
>>
>>32772147
It's irrelevant if they were friendly. They shouldn't have allowed a rifle in that configuration to be sold. I wonder just who Marlin has doing quality control at their plant..
>>
>>32772185
>lever gun that's box fed
lol, enjoy either paying more for mags than the gun for any reasonable amount or being cucked to four and having to take it out with no way of topping off a magazine.
>>
>>32772232
If you have to have a leverguns at least get one that doesn't take twenty minutes to clear the jams you get with using anything but shotshells in a tube mag.

Or, do the same thing and go get either a semi auto carbine or a bolt action.

>>32773167
Winchester made the 88, after the 95, and it featured detachable magazines that the 95 didn't have, in addition to a few other superior features such as its rotating bolt. So while the 95 could be included and probably should, it seems like the 88 was Winchester's final, most advanced product as far as lever guns go. And for that matter the BLR should also be listed.
