Glad I caught this thread early. I've been wanting to get into the AK game. WASRs seem to be suggested a lot for babbys first AK. What's the difference between a WASR 10 and a WASR 10/63? What is a good price to pay for one? What are some other AKs I should look at that are similarly priced?
>>
>>32737841
I want one bad as well. They look great with a vz stock. Should have grabbed a folder and sat on it. They went from $30 to $75 in the last few months.
>>
>>32738144
I need sunglasses to look at that stock.
Please don't do this.
>>
>>32738144
the steel looks good so I'm just doing the wood

I want do do a dark brown/rust type color but I still haven't made my decision yet. I just don't like the way the WASR looks stock. It looks like a play toy
>>
>>32738178
Maybe consider getting some surplus Romanian wood instead? Would be cheap and a better quality base to refinish.
>>
>>32738178

Is the stock laminated? The new WASR wood looks like shit and no finish will improve it.
>>
>>32738144
>refinishing the steel?
>black paint over park

This. Rust-Oleum nonreflective matte black BBQ grill paint. Just bake it in an oven afterwards to harden the paint. At least 400 degrees, at least one hour.
>>
>>32738190
that's a possibility too.
Do the Romanian stocks come with the little cleaning kit hole?
My WASR stock came without one and it was a little disappointment

>>32738195
I think it is. There is something on it. Looks like wood with either a clear finish on it or lamination
>>
>>32738178
> I just don't like the way the WASR looks stock. It looks like a play toy

IT's actually decent quality furniture. The problem is
A- It's hardwood
B- That color is absolute ass, unless they have a Yugo AK owners want their wood furniture to be red-orange.
C- It comes with this varnish that prevents any sort of refinishing, and it's a fucking cunt to get off
D- Said hardwood's grain is tighter than a nun's cunt, so even if you get the varnish off to restain, you have to soak it for like two weeks, and even then that yellow makes anything you choose look off
>>
>>32738195
>The new WASR wood looks like shit and no finish will improve it.

It's not a flaw, it's an opportunity. Rattlecan the shitty wood in camouflage colors. It won't be any uglier afterwards.

Rustoleum satin "dark taupe" spray paint is a very close match for "flat dark earth," though it dries to a semi-glossy finish. After it dries a few days hit it with 8-10 coats (yes, really) of the "matte clearcoat" stuff they sell, which will also dry to a semi-glossy finish that you can scuff with a green nylon scouring pad to get an actual nonreflective matte finish.
>>
>>32738169
I think the difference is the newer 10 is made with new parts, where as the 10/63 had demill or surplus parts. My opinion for starting ak options are :
$650-675 Wasr
$700-750 vepr sporter( you will spend extra for a bullet guide. Required for standard mags)
$850 slr 107-11

Any of those options are solid. Not bashing DDI or psa, the longer we watch the more data we have. I have my own DDI horror story ( was sent back 3 times in one years time) but that is far better then arsenals. Although I've heard they are getting better
>>
>>32738231
Yeah, surplus will have the cleaning kit trapdoor. There's at least one guy selling Romanian furniture on akfiles right now.
>>
>>32738236
I can't disagree. That shiny yellow varnish over pale, almost white, blond European birch might be okay for a kitchen table but I can't tolerate it on a firearm.

They should have stuck with the laminate, maybe with some kind of matte nonreflective oil finish, tung oil or boiled linseed oil, to put a waterproof or at least water-resistant coating on it that will be nonreflective and maybe darken it a shade or two. That in my opinion would be an improvement.

Of course, while we're wishing, it'd be kinda nice if the Romanians would put an AKM style lower handguard on them--it's a preference of mine, though it isn't huge for me.

It's funny because that designation doesn't even really exist, but that doesn't stop plebs from making shit as seen there that's neon-red under a quarter inch thick layer of clear lacquer.
>>32738190
Do this, surplus Gypsyshit furniture is a breeze to refinish and it takes to brown/red/orange stains very well.
>>32738231
>Do the Romanian stocks come with the little cleaning kit hole?
Yes.
>>
>>32738281
Yeah, I busted my ass trying to refinish the stuff that came with my WASR but in the end I should have just coughed up the money for a complete surplus set. In no way was the end-result worth all the time and work I put into it, complete waste of both.

>What's the difference between a WASR 10 and a WASR 10/63?
A bit of an irrelevant question these days since the (current) WASR-10 has been the only available model for the past few years. The 10/63 has since been discontinued. It started out with the prior WASR-10 in the early 2000s, and it was an iffy hodge-podge of rejected PM md. 63 componets and surplus. Quality varied wildly, and it quickly started a decade-long meme that still hasn't fully left the WASR name. Then came the 10/63 in 2007, which was a WASR made with surplus components with buffed up QC. These were widely considered to be solidly-built tanks that were perfect for beginners and budget-oriented users, and were insanely customizable. A half dozen years later, the new WASR-10 comes out, which is what we have today, and that's made with new components and put together just as solidly as the previous 10/63. You will not find the older 10 and the 10/63 outside of the secondary market these days.
>>

>Arsenal
People in glass houses, m8.

Most WASR owners know the reputation and are happy if it's straight but realize not all will be, while when Arsenal's QC drops like a rock people like you still vehemently defend their brand because, as you put it, "Well mine's not shit so Arsenal's are good now!"

MSDs assessment of how WASRs designation has changed and why, is correct.
Just because you don't like the guy and he's a filthy goatposter, doesn't make his info false.

Over and over and overrrrrr. How dare my arms be longer than yours. If only Hillary had been elected, I could have been equalized with my fellow man and have normal-length arms like everyone else.

>Bitching about a stock sleeve
Atleast I use my rifle, unlike you.
>>
>>32739300
Every gun ever will have lemons that make it out, you'll very rarely see the same QC mistakes from run to run from arsenal. Meanwhile the WASR has had the same problems since day 1 but instead of people suggesting to get something else most people will tell someone to just find a WASR that doesn't have these issues. How this is okay but extremely limited QC issues on a much better rifle are seen as total rifle-breakers when it's stated in the warranty that arsenal will fix anything that affects the function of the rifle.

And I wanted to get low light and use my flash in that picture to bring out the plum mag, it wasn't showing up in regular lighting

>>
>>32739337
Depends on where you want to stop, honestly. There are small total-autism ak builders that make amazing rifles but the price and lead time is pretty prohibitive for most but the most discerning among us. Most people will agree that arsenal is pretty damn good, despite some QC issues. But honestly if you don't inspect your rifle before accepting it you're pretty dumb IMO.

I'm not going to go through the entire internet looking for specific instances but several saiga models are over $1.5k now, along with several, if not most VEPR rifles. Also a lot of good kit builds approach the $2k. It's okay to not know shit dude, but to be ignorant and abrasive is pretty dumb

>Meanwhile the WASR has had the same problems since day 1
And what would that be?
>Canted sights?
Arsenal has this issue regularly, and you can find it going back quite a few years.
All Arsenalfags cry is "Can you zero it? Then it's fine", while at the same time decrying a WASR with the same issue.
>Improperly cut magwell?
Hasn't been an issue for WASRs for about a decade.

>How this is okay but extremely limited QC issues on a much moe expensive rifle are seen as total rifle-breakers.
At their price point, there should be zero issues, because if you aren't paying for quality then what are you getting for that premium besides a sidefolder trunnion?
>when it's stated in the warranty that arsenal will fix anything that affects the function of the rifle
So will Century, strangely enough.

You're identifying too much with a brand and not being able to be subjective.
For the record, I don't own a WASR or Arsenal, although I wouldn't have a problem with either.

>I wanted to get low light and use my flash in that picture to bring out the plum mag, it wasn't showing up in regular lighting
Ah, well it looks your flash didn't even fire.

Again, it's a nice rifle and I'm glad yours is perfect but don't think Arsenal is the end all be all because they have plenty of issues of their own.

We got off the original topic though.

Off center, non concentric, and canted sights are to spec with an AK if it zeroes, always been this way, don't like it your in the wrong system.

MFW the 1988 Izzy we found in Afghanistan had a canted RSB and Izhmash canted the FSB the opposite way so it would zero.

Putting different countries wood on your WASR? I think this is your question?
Nahh, i see all sorts of things on a WASR, one of the trips here insists on keeping a set of plum furniture on his. As far as mags go, i personally stick with surplus stuff for my SAR-2, you can trust surplus and surplus 7.62 mags are as cheap as they are ever gonna be right now. Id avoid magpul and tapco for mags that you will or would carry innawoods, they are okay range mags. Id go with a surplus russian sling they are GOAT.
>>
>>32741348

It doesnt really matter what you shoot in a mosin because it's going to shoot 8-12" high at 100 yards anyway.

So I saw an M76 in 7.92mm for 1350? Is this reasonable? It was in pretty good condition and I kind of fell in love with this thing when I saw it. I dropped off my pistol at this place's gunsmith for some trigger work, so I'm going to get a good look at the barrel and see if there's matching SNs.

Pic specifically related.

I'm not sure I would recommend it as a first AK. While they are very good quality, various things will not work with them due to their receiver being thicker than a standard AKM (1.6mm I think). Also due to it being a ban era rifle it lacks a bayonet lug and a threaded barrel. So as far as customization goes, you will be a bit limited. The Chu wood is also pretty soft, so it dents fairly easily.

Im not telling him not to get it, i'm just saying that it does have limitations when compared to a standard AKM. As a first AK, most people want to play around with it a bit, try out different furniture and such. The MAK-90, while a great rifle, doesn't fit that role as well as say a WASR would. I highly recommend getting one, but not for what I imagine a "first AK" would be. Also I realize you can shave down furniture, but I was referring to the fact that certain wire folding stocks tend to not fit them.

You can put other stocks on MAKs, Ive seen people convert them back to a preban look before. Like what was pointed out earlier, you may have to do some filing to get the stock to fit, but it does to my knowledge have a standard rear trunion that is able to accept AKM stocks. I am not sure about a triangle folder but I would assume no. Another thing I forgot to mention is that MAKs don't have optic mounts on the side of their receivers. Of course you could put time and money into it and make it how you want, but as a base rifle, there are more immediate customization options with a standard AKM. Not trying to dissuade you from trading for one, but just know what you are getting so you don't regret it.

Naw I was too late for that party. Picked it up for $600 or so from a gun show.

Still kinda curious about the Vector Arms build the guy offered me. Romanian build, CHF CL barrel, estimated 2-300 rounds through. I asked what he thought the gun was worth and he said $750-$800. That seems like a tad bit of a stretch to me for a Romanian build but I don't know a ton about AK's.

Imports are artificial, what kind of logic do you subscribe to? I am pretty sure import laws are real and regardless of how you "view" them they are the law and set a standard. Want a $300 AK, move to south america or Africa. If not don't whine about the "high" American prices due to import law.

I do not agree with many laws but it does not mean I just look past them and make my own set of prices for what should be standard sales in the US. Sorry brother I live in the real world...
