About to get my very first revolver.

S&W642 as pictured, what are some things a first time revolver owner should get along with the gun?

Also, are Buffalo Bore P+ loads safe to use in Airweight S&Ws?

They're the rounds I'd have on me on a bad day, they're simply just SOOOOO much more powerful than standard .38 or even most .38 P+

I might go with the standard pressure rounds depending on how I shoot the P+ ones.
>>
I'm thinking of getting a revolver for range and HD, and I found a few around me locally for around $600-650. Are any of these worth the price and pick?

Model 28-2, 686, GP100, Dan Wesson 15-2.

I'm also considering getting a SAA clone, probably in .357 because it's cheaper to shoot.

Those are all good revolvers, but the Dan Wesson and GP100 will be built stronger and not have a shitty Hillary Hole in them.

28-2 is an awesome gun. It's a descendant of the Registered Magnum, which was the very first gun designed to shoot .357 Magnum, and it's basically guaranteed to never shoot itself loose.

Pocket holster is a must.
I like speed strips, easy way to carry spare ammo.
I carry the 135 +P Gold Dots in mine, but Federal HST is supposed to come out with a 130 +P load sometime this year.
For practice, just shoot standard pressure 38 special. I prefer the FMJ practice rounds over the lead bullet ones. Just easier to clean the gun afterwards.

The N-frame is indeed larger, but perhaps not to the extent that you're thinking. The 28 has the same frame size as a Smith and Wesson Model 29 (ie the Dirty Harry gun), which, while definitely a big gun, is by no means excessively big or difficult to shoot for most men.

As previously stated, what it has over the 686 is its durability, its aesthetics (for me at least), and its pedigree. The earlier 27s/28s are some of the nicest production guns S&W ever made.

>>32723958
I'm pretty sure what you're looking at there is a nickeled 27-2. The grip frame and underlug look too large relative to the 4 inch barrel for it to be a 19 or 66.

Whats a good caliber choice?
I would like it yo be a caliber thst could kill anyiving thing on the north American continent.

.357 magnum?
.44 magnum?
45LC?

What else is an option for levergun/revolver combo?

>>
>>32724675
>doesn't want to come out

oh, yeah mine was a little sticky/tight getting it out the first time.

once i stripped it and did a thorough clean/lube, it comes out easier every time

I think i squeezed some solvent lube on it and used the hammer strut to drift it out. just needs a little force applied by hand. you shouldn't have to pound on it with a hammer or anything
>>
>>32724674
>Whats a good caliber choice? I would like it yo be a caliber thst could kill anyiving thing on the north American continent.

All of the calibers you listed can do it with the right load, but .44 Magnum would obviously have the easiest time of it. That said, .357 Magnum is by far the cheapest to shoot of the three and will get the job done in most cases, especially when used in a carbine.

>>
>>32724784
.44-40 in standard load has about twice the energy of .45 Colt in standard load but that's because the .45 is older and black powder guns are still out there. You can get new hotter loads for .45 but only shoot them in Ruger pistols or new lever guns. Those are way more powerful than .44-40. I wouldn't go for moose without the +P .45 Colt.

You just can't achieve the same level of accuracy and smoothness that you can with an S&W or a Colt.

The original Cattleman has two easily removed safeties. One in the hammer which requires swapping the hammer out and the other is a long cylinder base pin with two notches also requires swapping with a standard pin. Once these safeties are removed the Cattleman is functionally identical (and inherently unsafe) as the Colt SAA. I shoot mine with any load I would use in the Colt and love it.

Cattleman II has a firing pin disconnect built into the hammer. Looks like an original but the internals are different enough that one of the cocking notches is eliminated. You can only spell C-O-L

Is this info coming directly from uberti? It was my understanding that it was merely speculation that the second notch on the cylinder pin was a safety notch.

An urban youth will probably get my current revolver (namely my miscreant mulatto daughter) when she's old enough to have a gun of her own and I have cash enough to build my dream gun.

Get a modern handgun as your first, its your life at stake, no need to put it one chance with a wheel gun. Function, THEN aesthetics.

For CCW? get a k-frame in .38 special with the longest barrel you're comfortable concealing. I have a S&W 64 with a four inch bull barrel. Recoil is very manageable, and I can achieve good groups shooting more rapidly than I ever will with the .357 magnum. .38 special was good enough for self defense back when people trusted their lives to round nosed lead bullets; with modern self defense ammunition, .38 is an excellent defensive round.
>>
>>32741587
No concealed carry in NJ. Just looking for a SHTF gun I guess.

>>
>>32741670
Oh! Well, with only home defense and innawoods to consider, then by all means, get a big beefy .357! If I had the money to spend on a HD specific revolver in addition to my carry gun, I'd get something like a long barrelled S&W 686P. Seven rounds of .357 magnum in a large enough package to make recoil more than manageable.

>>32741726
Thanks
>>
>>32740906
You will get more use out of a 357. 500 mag is expensive as hell and the weapon will be pricey. Get a stainless ruger gp100 and put some nice wood grips on it. Sorry you live in the peoples republik of new jersey

If you're going for a camping gun, get some barrel length so you're not fucked on muzzle energy. The 329pd with the x500 grips may be your ticket, or go 454/460/500 if you want a really short barrel but still some energy. Or...a G20/40 in 10mm.
