What gives?

the Swedish ljungman design using actual direct impingement predated stoners designs by a decade.

Didn't Armalite sell the design rights of the AR-15 to Colt?

Also, while the AR-18 was designed to be fairly low cost, it's main design purpose was to be easily made by countries that didn't have great manufacturing capability. To me the AR-15 bolt and piston looks much easier to make than an AR-15 BCG.

It's easier and doesn't require as much advanced tooling to make a gun with a stamped body and a gas-piston, see the AKM.

A common misconception is that it's cheaper, but that's not always the case.
Some African or South American nation might not have the industry or the tooling to machine something like an AR15 receiver to an acceptable standard, or to make the bolt-carrier group with the proper tolerances.

>>32680157
OP is wrong and the AR15 doesn't even use the same gas-operation as the Ljungman so the point is moot.

Pic related, on the AR15, the gas is taken in through a key into the BCG for unlocking, while on a Ljungman, there is no such arrangement or operation and the gas stops outside the BCG, plain pushing it (not entirely different from a short-stroke piston, if you think about it)

when will this stupidity die?
>>

They did sell the rights to Colt, they still even own the "AR15" trademark, you can sell an AR15 rifle design, but you can't outright call it an "AR15", because that still belongs to Colt.

>>32680238
9 out of 10 modern military style rifles are an AR18 derivative, the ACR being one of them.

I don't think it's inherently a bad thing, but it's funny to hear people complain about the market being saturated with AR15s and then point at the various AR18 clones as innovative.

>I don't understand how the AR15 works
Gas goes through the BCG (essentially acting as a secondary gas-block), and is vented out the ejection port.

You're probably the kind of guy who thinks the HK416 is really clean and futuristic.

Stop this.

No one ever claimed this.

It was a gun without a war. By the time it was ready to enter the market all the worthwhile contracts of that generation had already been decided. Also Armalite caught a case of Jew tier greed and made the magazines proprietary. Other than that the basic design has been copied almost verbatim in other later guns. Like the G-36 for instance. As for combat the only standing force that ever fielded them in any quantity was the IRA so that's not really good for the guns reputation. That being said if I ever come across a 180B with a cracked lower on the cheap I'm going to snatch it up faster than a feminist on a free cupcake.

Just buy a 180B now and have the lower replaced.

They look badass as fuck with these.

There not as easy to find any more and every time I've seen one the guy selling thinks it's worth as much as a Howa. I should have said replacing the lower was already the plan that's why the one in my post was used. My apologies for not being clear on that.
>>
>>32680082
Because he realized that the benefits of short stroke pistons outweighed the slight increase in manufacturing cost?

>>32680417
Is there a manufacturer making replacement lowers? Because it kinda sounds like they're prone to cracking.

>>32681621

He invented whatever the gas system in the AR-15 is. It's not DI, because DI looks like pic related, which isn't how the AR-15 works.
>>
>>32681682
I just call it the stoner gas system write it off. Yes, if you had to classify it it would be direct impingment, but it shares none of the qualities of an actual DI system.
>>
>>32681424
The old AR18 and AR180 rifles had stamped steel lowers which were pretty much fine.

The later AR180B rifle had a plastic lower which wasn't quite so sturdy.

NoDak Spud made a machined aluminum lower so that people could replace the plastic lowers on their AR180B rifles if they wanted to
>>
>>32681700
>if you had to classify it it would be direct impingement
I don't see why that would be. It is it's own class.
>>
>>32681700
I like calling it "Gas Expansion", because it makes it sound much more distinct from DI (which it also is, mechanically).
>>
>>32681867
>(which it also is, mechanically)

But gas is piped through a tube attached to the carrier, through the carrier, and against the back of the bolt.

If anything, it's indirect gas impingement.
>>
I wonder how sacrilegious and pointless a DI AR-18 will be?
>>
>>32681910
So not DI. Cool.
>>
>>32681921
100% pointless, why would you do that vs an AR-15 as a private citizen?

Curiosity?
>>
>>32681959
But why
>>
>>32681981
Why not?

If you mean the actual DI like on a Ljungman, I think it could be interesting.

Because there's no point, stupid.

Actual DI could be interesting.
