Looking shortly at some 3 gun setups is sort of changing how I'm viewing my first AR build

First I was going to go standard mid length 16 inch but seeing what a lot of these three gun guys run I'm starting to think the optimal setup might be 18 inch barrel with rifle length gas and a super light free floated mlok rail. Alongside a good variable scope.

Thoughts?
>>
>>32678310
Go away, turkroach.
>>
>>32677811
That's the problem with those 1-6 and 1-8 optics, they are long and heavy as fuck.

Short of bench precision shooting, I find it rare to ever need more than 4x on a 5.56 gun.

Even on my precision 18" guns I rarely used more than 4x.
>>
>>32678322
This. You can make hits to the edge of an AR's viable range using 1x and red dots.
>>
>>32678322
>>32678330

>>
>>32678332
I shoot 3 gun. I don't know anyone who cranks their magnification all the way to 6, even guys who have 1-6 optics. Half the guys end up making hits at the 300+ yard ranges on 1x still just to cut time, others crank to 3x-4x generally.
>>
>>32678354
Woops meant to only quote the guy who said ars viable range using 1x and RDS not you

shot 100 rounds (mix of .223 AE, Winchester White Box, IMI) my newly assembled AR yesterday, had 3 incidents of pic related.
Then had bolt not holding open twice as well.

Got real freaked out because I didn't want to go through all the troubleshooting and worse of all, needing to measure the gas port and maybe making it bigger, I don't got the tools for that.

Brought it home, cleaned and lubed the fuck out of it. Went back to range today. Bolt holds open with repeated single loaded mag test.
100 rounds later (same ammo selection except Winchester is replaced by PMC XTAC) No problems at all today.

So ammo problem?

It's trash. PTAC is bad. Psa doesn't actually make them. It's some trashy manufacturer that makes out of spec parts.
Freedom is the bare minimum. Get a CHF or premium from PSA if it's within budget.

Not too long after the LE version hit retail. Love it.
>>
Why do AR manufacturers insist on having carbine length gas system on 16" barrel? You get better reliability, smoother recoil and longer sight radius with a middy gas system and it doesn't even cost more to make.

Cool. I almost picked one up off of PSA when they had a sale a while back. I may still get one eventually just to satisfy my HK fanboyism. I really need to get a holster and mag carriers for my USP right now.
>>
>>32678888
The normie market is huge, there's a fuckload of cheap carbine 16" barrels to be bought by the truckload, it was the civilian market standard for M4geries for a long time.
>>
>>32678888
I thought putting in a heavier buffer would smooth out any complaints with carbine gas on 16" barrel?

Do it. It's an awesome striker fired gun. P30 ergos with a very decent trigger for a striker. Get the LE package though, well worth it for the tritium sights and extra mag.
>>
>>32678909

It doesn't remove the problem that 16" carbine gas guns are usually grossly overgassed the the chamber pressure during extraction is also higher than with middy gas system.
>>
>>32678865
ffs if you're going to spout off on crap you don't know then at least be specific.

PTAC is Practical Tactical, a local company physically near PSA. they produce parts in bulk under contract for some other assemblers, and bought older Bushmaster/Sendra/Sabre Defence tooling to make their stuff. Blackhawk!, working off molds from Mossberg and old Eagle Arms (pre buyout of Olympic Arms) as well as the good bits that Vulcan didn't fuck up on (small parts mostly) make the plastic parts and things like hammers and triggers. pins and springs are bought from a wholesaler - same people that supply Brownells even.

PTAC lacks any chrome lining. they are CMV, and quite decent for the money. that being said, it's $200 or so for an assembled basic bitch upper that they dont give a shit about cosmetics, so treat them all as blem parts. they are mechanically functional and will work fine for range use or even light duty work (sabre defence / bushmaster / blackhawk)

don't expect stellar accuracy and you aren't bitch slapping satan with it, either.

Yeah. I'm becoming more fond of any package with 3 mags and night sights standard. It saves me the effort of buying them and installing them myself.

That's the one thing that bugged me about the USP45 tactical. The suppressor sights aren't night sights. I'm probably gonna switch them out for Heines.
>>
>>32678888
>Why do AR manufacturers insist on having carbine length gas system on 16" barrel?
because it works. over gassing will just recoil a bit more and wear harder. it meets the legal requirement without too many unique parts (gas tube, barrel for the gas port size and position, gas port drilling fixture)
>>
>>32678933
TBQH over gassing can result in more than just increased wear and recoil. Failures due to dwell time and sheering off the lips on casings becomes much more common, though I agree it's not an incredibly pervasive problem in most cases assuming the gas port is the proper size, the correct buffer is used and a competent company/person is putting it together.
>>
>>32678888
>Why do AR manufacturers insist on having carbine length gas system on 16" barrel?
Why do the poors insist on shooting weak ammo.
>>
>>32678951
Ask PTR owners, I hear they can get steel case with an EBT card
>>
>>32678941
it's been a thing since the 70's. 8.375" dwell, carbine or rifle buffer, 0.7" gas port and it'll work riki-tik
>>
Mek ur shit is sent, the address you gave me did not play nice with SSK though

Will emal when I get home
>>
>>32678960
PTR has no issues with steel case, much like the HK91 it's a copy of. blow back is a violent extraction and ejection, and the fluted chamber is tough to build up enough carbon to glue the case to the chamber.

so for blasting, steel case is cheap and effective, and accurate enough to not make a difference.

Not too sure about what stock I should put on the lower going with this upper. It'll be sporting an 18" barrel with a suppressor and a Vortex scope, 2,5-10 or 4-16 depending on what I find more sensible.

No clue about what stocks would be a good match for this kinda front-heavy upper so I wanted to ask you guys. So far I have looked at these:

Fixed stocks:
A2
Magpul MOE Rifle

Collapsible stocks:
Magpul ACS
Magpul ACS-L
VLTOR EMOD

The lower will be a DPMS with a commercial receiver extension, is there any reason to consider swapping out the cmrcl. one with a milspec?
My choice is a bit limited as I am in Europe and the local suppliers have quite small selections of AR stocks.

Norway, a lot of European countries have moronic minimum length laws. Here it is minimum 84cm total length and 40cm barrel length for rifles/shotguns, 33" and 15,75" for you lot.

Oil money income level equals oil money purchasing power and oil money pricing.
>>
>>32679991

>>

Yeah I know I'm from Europe too, but at least here we don't have barrel lenght laws...
>>
>>32679916
Some of the currently issued rifles are fn though, so both Colt and FN are legitimate routes to work with.

Both moderately expensive though for what you get, such is life in the clone zone.
>>
>>32680007
>>32680020
40cm/15,75" barrel length is a-OK with me, the minimum OAL however is absolutely bumfuckingly retarded. There is no reason to make it 84cm over 80cm or 60cm. 60cm would be a perfect minimum OAL for people with folding stock rifles that like to put them into backpacks while hunting/hiking.
>>
>>32679923

SOPMOD is my favorite stock. I mentioned the UBR and PRS to help balance your heavy ended rifle. SOPMOD > ACS, however I've never messed with an Emod so I can't comment on it. Ofc this is all personal preference too

Of course it's subjective, but I appreciate your input. I'll consider the SOPMOD too then. The ACS already seems g2g with me, EMOD too, but I'll have to think about it. Lower won't be here for a while either way, so there will be plenty of time to stare at Brownells

>>32680029
Hey Mek, on your A1 build how did you sight in the rifle? I'm thinking about the 25/300 zero because that's the military standard but it also makes sense that if I zero at 50 yards that I'll have a much tighter margin of error until 300 yards, as opposed to being 7" high at 200 with the other or whatever, and when I shoot to 500 I can use the "L" aperture and hold the top of the target. Any tips?

Best controlled range we have is 200 yards so thats where I zero pretty much everything. 25/300 zero is the most optimal if you have the space.

500 without a NM front post will be difficult, but not impossible. front sight posts are cheap and you can buy a pack of different size ball post for less than $100.

You should have the same POI as 25 yds.

This varies from different barrel lengths and ammunition, always confirm actual zero after doing a 25 or 50 yd zero. There are also other methods taught by other instructors on how and why they do different zero lengths.

Uh, Mark Larue makes some of the best barrels ever to grace the Ar15 combat rifle system platform. Professionals have been using his products all over the GWOT and you should be honored that he would even entertain the idea of selling to civs like you.

Theres a reason why esteemed veteran shooters like Chris Costa use Larue. If you came here to troll and complain, you better see your way out. You've been warned.

Have the sopmod and emod. very similar cheekrest profile but the emod butt slopes to the toe whereas the sopmod is perpendicular to the receiver extension. so that is a fairly big change depending on how you like the rifle to present into the pocket.

the emod will also punish you for not shaving.

I have a Surefire M620 and a X300U and I really find them expensive compared to my Streamlight TLR-1 which...is fucking solid and just works. It just works. Mud, going through a window, getting hit all the time.

Really, can't find why Streamlight should be labelled "bad".

Because they came with the gun. MRO is mounted in the back because you would know if you had an MRO. Tried it everywhere on the flat top, had better results with it all in the back.

Oh and for the retard >>32682650
saying poorfag, I prefer quality over retardness. Streamlight makes quality products that works. Surefire also. One just charge more than the other.

It's not exactly easy for him to build an ergodynamic parts rifle in Frog land I hear.
>>
>>32682650
My Protac RM1 has both better spill and throw than my M300D. The pressure switch is better too.

The Protac RM is kinda-sorta unproven on durability. I say kinda-sorta as it's their normal Protac with a different body tube, and the normal Protac has a very long and very good track record. Pretty much the only part that isn't 100% proven is the tape switch, and it's not like Surefire tape switches don't fail *constantly*.

You can't buy parts gun in France as I've stated a billion times. You buy a pre-built rifle and then you swap what bugs you out. For exemple, the Windham you see in the bottom used to be this one.

I have just bought a couple of lowers in MD and was wondering

If I built an AR that isn't in compliant with MD shitty fucking feature bans such as not heavy barrel and shit like that would I ever get arrested?

Would range fags call up cops when they look at my AR just to make sure I'm compliant with that shit?

I just don't want to be arrested for having banned features in my AR
