Thinking about buying my first gun very soon, looking for some sort of rifle. (Not interested in a hand gun currently)

I want something that is easy to fix or work on, cheap ammo (So I can shoot it as often as I can), and a good weapon for any situation like hunting, shooting at the range, home defense, survival, and etc.

At first I was thinking of getting a AK but I think for now a 10/22 Ruger or something would be better suited for a first time gun owner.

Would appreciate some advice or insight! Thanks in advance.

WASR. DO NOT buy American AKs.
>>
>>32668056
There is nothing wrong with it anon. I have been a city dweller my whole life and have not even shot a gun before.
I just want to get something to start off with, and get some experience. .22 LR ammo is extremely cheap and would be great for practice.

>>32668072
Agreed mate they suck, I have seen videos on them and am not a fan.

>>32667963
Get an AR and get a .22LR upper and a 5.56 upper for it.

You can spend all day at the range getting good with .22LR then at the end slap the 5.56 upper back on and rediscover cock. You will never get over the loss of your tits though.
>>
>>32668227
Sounds like a great idea actually anon, only thing is that a .22 LR is fairly expensive (After a quick internet search)

Might as well get something like this
https://www.atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-rifles/bca-223-wylde-classic-detail.html?Itemid=0

and a 10/22 Ruger to go alongside it and then shoot whichever I feel like that day, or whatever would be better for the occasion.
>>
You really can't go wrong with a .308. Consider the Tikka T3 or T3x, Remington 700, Howa 1500 or Weatherby Vanguard, Savage something, Browning BAR...
Put down something similar to the price of a new rifle on the scope (Leupold, Zeiss, Nightforce, Swarovski, Leica, Meopta...)
That's really all you need (and if the rifle has iron sights you don't even need the scope) to get shooting, but a bipod, rear bag and cuff sling can all be had for cheap.
>>
>>32667963

>thinking of getting a AK

Arsenal is bringing in a fixed stock slr107 for $850 this year. Go with that.
>>
>>32668109
>I have been a city dweller my whole life
First of all, I'm extremely sorry because innacountry shooting is the best.
>and get some experience
Then go for a gun that gives you a great experience. NEVER, EVER buy a gun unless it gives you a boner and gets you really excited to see it when you see it. Don't make your gun collection into a boring set of tools, destined to die a dusty death in some dark closet/safe. Make them into your favorite and coolest toys to use and show off.

>>
>>32668595
Shoot sorry I meant the .22 receiver for the AR.

Fixed stocks have a lot better sling points on them, I'm always torn whether I want the objectively great sling points, or cool factor of a folder, even if it is 99% useless IRL.

Why the low price?
>>
>>32668583

I've been shopping around for AKs and the only ones I've seen that I liked so far were WASRs and Arsenal's.

Bolt action. 22lr are really awesome and will shoot better than you for a long time. They are easier to clean (don't really have to clean the action) usually a bit cheaper to buy and they slow down your shooting so it cost even less. I bought my formally anti gun wife a savage mk2 and it is a great gun. She doesn't like bigger more concussive rifles.

I prefer the sidefolder rear sling point for use with a vickers sling or whatever blue force gear is selling these days. It's actually long enough to shoot with rather than just carry slung on your back, but can be tightened up with the triglide. If you're using a shorter Bulgarian or Russian sling then I tend to agree.

The most practical use for a sidefolder in my experience has been ease of transportation. I've got plenty of small and discreet bags that easily fit my 107fr or 104fr and a few mags.

>>32668610

Some people get the impression that they're going after DDI/PSA market. Another consideration is that these don't need the folding stock rear trunnion and hardware installed once they reach Arsenal LV like the FR models do, so they're saving money on hardware and labor.

>>32668625

There were claims that the two new 107 models would be going up on the website today, but I haven't seen them listed yet. This is basically a SHOT show announcement anyway.

>>32668673

>isn't that somewhat expensive for an AK?

Not really, considering the current AK market. wasr rifles jumped into the $700+ range right around the election. DDI was trying to sell their all American rifles for around a grand. $850 for a Bulgarian AK with a CHF CL barrel? Yeah, it's going to sell.

Couple things OP:
>what state do you live in
This is important, I work at a gun shop in commiefornia and you'd be surprised how many dildos still ask for a regular AR
>have you ever used guns before
If you've shot before, especially anything above .22 then dont be a little bitch and use 5.56 or 7.62. But if you've never shot before and buy something in 7.62 you could develop a nasty flinch, can be hard to get rid of and you'll never hit anything at first
>what is your budget
You can build a decent starter AR for less than 600, 1000 gets you even more
>do you have any unpaid parking tickets or even a warrant?
You'd be surprised how many people get denied because they didn't pay for a parking ticket back in may 2016

Don't listen to nu-/k/

There's a reason the sticky recommends .22. It will not be a hunting (beyond varmint) or home defense rifle. It's for you to learn proper shooting skills and give you lots of practice time, which gets you more into the hobby.

Do not fall for the flashy rifle meme. You will end up spending a lot of money for something that sits around and you never shoot it.

Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 60 are both great choices, and will last for a long time. Get the Ruger if you want aftermarket, get the Marlin if you want out-of-the-box. There is not defined second-stage after this, shoot .22 until you know what you want out of your next gun purchase.

I have both 22 rifle/handgun, and 177/22 pellet rifles.
I find my pellet rifles to be infinitely better training tools than 22 since they're actually cheap, quiet-ish, and safe to use, but still pack a pretty serious punch.
>>
>>32668918

>shoot .22 until you know what you want out of your next gun purchase

The only thing you're going to figure out by shooting .22lr out of a rifle is that you'll want to buy a centerfire rifle REALLY soon. I shot maybe a box of golden bullets before I got bored and wanted more bang, more effective range, and the ability to defend myself.
>>
>>32669001

Pellet rifles can also be used to practice in your backyard pretty much everywhere.

10/22
WASR
SKS
M&P 15
Mossberg 500
Mosin (be careful it's drying up)
All solid options altough if you don't have shooting experience the 500 or the Mosin might make you develop a flinch
>>
>>32670428
10/22 seems really nice, just worried if it would be reliable or not.

What happens when you develop a flinch?
>>
>>32669670
Then I'd recommend getting a .22, I started with an M1 Garand and developed a nasty flinch and it took some range time to get rid of it. Ruger 10/22 is pretty standard plus tons of different aftermarket parts. If you're looking at a full size rifle cartridge then you might want to look at mil surp. Mosins are over 250 and aren't really that great past 100 yards. Any mauser will be fine and there's still ammo about, just won't be as cheap as .22. Again, if you've never fired a gun in your life, 8mm mauser or 7.62 is gonna feel like a bitch.

>.22
-cheap to shoot
-easy to maintain
-lever actions are even more fun
- >300

>Rifle cartridge (mil surp)
-cool historical value
-shows you the basics of shooting
-ammo may not be as cheap but you won't shoot 1000 8mm in one sitting
-milsurp will only go up in value
>>
>>32670574
10/22 should be reliable, they have a great reputation.

Large caliber guns can make people who are unexperienced flinch right before their shots due to the aggressive recoil. The flinch would just be a bad habit to overcome, you'd lean into your shots and it would hurt their accuracy.
>>
>>32670593
I think a .22 would be perfect for me! I like all of the pros, seems like I could get a lot of needed practice and just learn more about operating and shooting in general.

Eventually if I could get a Mosin for a good price I would because I think they are cool.

Also Henry makes a lever action rifle chambered with .22 LR or .22 Magnum, are they any good?
http://www.cabelas.com/product/shooting/firearms/rimfire-rifles/lever-action-rimfire-rifles%7C/pc/104792580/c/553829580/sc/105530580/i/105532380/henry-lever-action-22-lr-and-22-magnum-rimfire-rifles/1791590.uts?destination=%2Fcategory%2FLever-Action-Rimfire-Rifles%2F105532380.uts#tabsCollection

What would be better this one or a 10/22?
>>
>>32670616
Thanks I wouldn't like to develop a flinch so a .22 sounds great for a starter gun.
>>
>>32667963

>just get an AR
>>
My first rifle was a 10/22. I modified it so much it's now completely unrecognizable. They are easily one of the most modifiable .22s. They are easy to clean, and they have a fast learning curve. All these alpha males here will tell you .22 is for children, but they forget one important thing. .22 is the best for first time shooters. It's much easier and safer to learn using something light and easy to handle. It's why .22s are given to children. If you were going after a daisy red rider, then I would discourage you. I would say a 10/22 is a great way to go. Especially if you are inexperienced.
>>
>>32668056
Fuckin' day/k/are
>>
>>32670752
Thanks! The 10/22 is very cheap, the ammo is cheap, so many accessories and shit, and easy to use like you said.
It literally sounds like the perfect starter gun, I am gonna get one for sure now.

Maybe I should start buying some very much needed accessories before I go out and purchase it.
What accessories would you recommend?
>>
>>32670734
Awesome man, hope you love the rifle and the hobby!
>>
But what good is practicing with 22 if you intend to actually fire a real bullet at some point?

If you intend to use a higher caliber for something, you need to practice with that caliber. Nothing beats sliding a long silver bullet into a well greased chamber.
>>
>>32668673
AKs were cheaper, but the market for them sucks right now.
Even though I have a hard on for slavshit, the AR market gets you better quality for less right now.
>>
>>32670994

>>

>>

they're cheaper from the source:
http://www.tech-sights.com/ruger-products/

you could find a way to mount a laser, as there's a ton of customization options for a 10/22- it's like the Honda Civic of the gun world. Lots of people buying a cheap adequate gun and want to rice it out.
I'd recommend shooting a bit before deciding what you want.

>>32671836
Thanks for that mate, I'll bookmark the link. Should I mount some sights like that as soon as I get it, or shoot the gun first?
Also I don't know if it's hard or not to install the sight, but I guess I should take it to a gunsmith anyways so they can line it up for me, and get it shooting accurately.

Never tried it.
I guess it's only a $10 gamble, worst case.
It's meant for up to 22lr, but common handgun cartridges are slow and weak as balls too, probably just pull the stand out of the ground an annoying amount. I doubt it'd actually damage it.

Runnings I think? there's versions of it all over the place. Here's the only picture of the box I took for a recent acquisitions thread. I've seen them two times, both times selling for $9.99.

I actually have a Henry golden boy and it's amazing, now weather you want to spend 500 on a lever action .22 is up to you. It's also completely different function and design than a ruger 10/22.

Also a Mosin really isn't worth it anymore, at least for the price they're offering. Say 5 or more years ago when mosins were aplenty and we'll under 100, then yeah I'd say go for it. Last gun show I say a 91/30 for 250 and spam cans for 200. A Mauser, whether it be a yugo, argentine, or Russian capture, can be had for the same price, same ammo cost, waaaay more accurate, and it has a super reliable mauser action.
