Other than that, I'm sure current sword styles will translate over pretty well based on lightsaber hilt design. For example a curved hilt like Dooku's would better suit fencing and foil styles. But then that brings in the argument of bringing a sword to a gun fight. It won't happen unless we somehow come up with personal armor for everyday soldiers that is so resistant to hand-held ballistic weapons that it would necessitate a weapon like a lightsaber to defeat your foe.

With that in mind we're far more likely to make blasters/laser guns before we make lightsabers.

So the way I've seen it explained in canon is that

1-the blade is more like a U-shape. As in it comes out of one side of the emitter and goes back into the other side of the emitter. So its basically like a soldering iron on steroids.

2-Apparently (once again according to canon) the plasma forces create a natural gyroscopic effect on the blade and it constantly wants to be pointing up.

If we were that good at containing plasma fields we would use it to have portable fusion powerplants long before lightsabers got made, and then warfare would become repulsor-driven airspeeders chucking plasma bolts and railgun slugs at each other, since people can actually use those without casually dismembering themselves and each other.
