My girlfriend is seeing family this weekend, posted some photos of her granddad's weapons while he served in the Navy in WWII.
Could I get some info on it? We'd both like to know more.
That's an arisaka. Either a type 48 or type 99
I wonder if bring backs and war trophies are haunted. All of the surplus guns I have probably never saw action.
>>32649992
Interesting, what about the knives/swords?
>>32650033
The dagger in the sheath is a us marine kabar. The other dagger is a bayonet and the sword is a katana
>>32649966
Looks like an arisaka type 99. Standard issue jap rifle during ww2. Your pictures are shit though and it's hard to identify a gun based on its stock and trigger
>>32650049
It's not a KaBar, it's a Mk-3? I think knife.
>>32649966
Oh god please oil that Jap 99
>>32650049
Is there a name/type for the katana? The handle is an unusual shape.
>>32650053
Asking her for better pictures
>>32649966
>>32649971
That's a Type 99. Post a pic of the left side of the receiver and I can tell you the manufacturer and series. A shame that it's been neglected this whole time.
The bayonet is a Type 30 bayonet. There is also a maker's mark on the blade. If you show a pic of it I can tell you the maker of it too, or at least try to.
I'm not good with the swords though, but someone messed up the wrapping and/or rewrapped it totally wrong.
>>32649992
>type 48
No such thing existed.
>>32650033
arisaka bayonet that goes with the rifle, the katana doesn't look like an nco sword, it might be some nip officer's family steel.
>>32649971
I don't know about the gun but they picked up a stalker at that amusement park.
>>32650063
It literally says MK2 on the sheath.
OP is her grandpa a Jap or did he just bring these back as trophies?
>>32650063
It says MK2 on the knife
>>32650127
Brought them back as trophies. He's been dead for almost 30 years though.
She also says the knife is hard to unsheathe but she's getting it out now
>>32650248
>>32650262
A pic like this please. I can tell you the manufacturer and series.
It looks like the screws are still factory staked, which is nice, unless you think there is rust under the woodline.
>>32649966
I hope to God that hilt guard got bent on some jap's sternum and not prying on a '53 Ford hubcap.
End of photo dump
>>32650568
No pic like this? >>32650308
Seriously, if you actually want to know what it is you need a pic like that. It's like taking a pic of a wheel and asking what car it is.
Nonetheless, the bolt is missing some parts. There is the safety knob on the back and since it's missing the firing pin and spring is also probably missing.
>all that rust on everything
dishonorbru maintenance.

Is that fuckign electrical tape on the sword's grip?
Why is it that people are so lazy they will go out of their way to avoid keeping their own possessions in good shape? It's never been easier to read up on how to preserve historical artifacts. One search on google and you will have more information than even existed back in the 1940s.
Is it the throw away culture that America founded and has let fester for decades? The idea that if something gets a little beat up or dirty you just throw it away? Is it the sense of entitlement people all seem to have? That since they didn't pay for it, it's fine if it gets beat to shit? Is it just arrogance? Pure laziness? What is it, /k/? Why do people let their own possessions rot and decay while they barely exert any effort to preserve them?
>nb4 hurr durr people can do what they want with what they own
Sure, they obviously have done what they want with it. Fucking electrical tape, seriously? If you don't like something enough to take care of it, why do you let it clutter up your home? Why not sell it to a collector? Give it to a museum? Why just let it rot in your home where no one appreciates it? This goes back to my original question though, people these days seem totally fine with letting their own property decay and become worthless, simply because they can it seems.
>>32650619
>>32650683
No, I meant a pic like this one. Like I posted here: >>32650308
The other pic I posted was showing how the safety should look.
Here is mine, from my grandfather...
>>32650721
Is >>32650705 what you're referring to?
>>32650705
Ah, much better. It's a 20th series made by Kokura Arsenal. A fairly common maker and varation
>>32650675
>Is that fuckign electrical tape on the sword's grip?
It looks like it, unfortunately :(
.
>>32650775
>>32650262
Drip some Kroil into the sheath. It will lubricate and protect the knife and sheath.
>>32650789
>>32650675
they have no fucking idea what it is, and they just don't care
>>32650801
>>32650755
Thanks, Arisakanon.
Always nice to see people getting the opportunity to identify family trophies
>tfw i dont think my grandfather brought any trophies home from vietnam
>tfw not even a single ear/thumb

>>32650675
Or maybe the old man hated the japanese so much he could give two shits about the katana.
Eat shit, weaboo!

p sure you replied to the wrong person desu
>>32649971
The rifle is an Arisaka Type 99. The knife in the plastic sheath is a MK 2 (just like it says on it), and the other is the bayonet to the Arisaka. The sword is a badly fucked-up military issue gunto.
>>32650844
Took awhile. Had 11 pics to upload. This was in fair shape when I got it. Ballistol and patches helped big time. I bought 20 rounds of 7.7 jap for it. Shit is salty to buy! Point of interest. These stocks are made of sumac. So, try your hardest NOT TO SAND THESE DOWN!!
>>32650846
Do you have a pic of the bayonet? If you take the scabbard off there will be a symbol on the blade like this. I can tell you the manufacturer if you do.
As for the Sword, I would suggest you remove that electrical tape and hope it didn't do anything bad to the shagreen (ray/shark skin). You can then push the wooden dowel out (if it's still there) and there will be some Japanese writing on the metal under the grip. I'll be the first to admit that I know jack shit about those makers, but if you make an account on gunboards.com there are people on the "Firearms of the Rising Sun" board that do know a lot about them. If you make a post there they would love to help.
>>32650894
That was made by Nagoya Arsenal. I can't tell what the series is as the symbol to the left of the serial number is the series mark. Do you have a clearer pic of it?
>>32650903
That's a muzzle cover. Is it brass or is it plastic? You shouldn't store them on the muzzle (and yes, I know they were made for that) as they tend to warp. At least the plastic ones do.
>>32650962
Thanks, will do.
Was talking to my girlfriend more and apparently her granddad allowed his kids to play with the weapons he brought back from Japan.
Might be why parts of the gun is missing/electric tape/poor condition in general.
>>32650962
Muzzle cover I have is brass.
>>32650962
Also here is the bayonet
>>32650962
I wish my mum was intact and the bolt matched.
>>32650023
They're not
>>32651008
I hope to see it posted there sometime soon!
>>32651019
That is a first series. Is it missing it's monopod? Is it matching, including the dust cover?
>>32651028
That was made by National Denki under Kokura Arsenal supervision, hence the same Kokura cloverleaf type stamp. It's actually represents a stack of cannon balls viewed from the top.
It's a common bayonet.
>>32651061
Idk, every time I open my safe all my allies guns are on one side and my mauser has new scratches and dents in the stock.
>>32651067
Missing monopod and bolt doesn't match. It does still have the dust cover though. It is posted as Arisaks6 in the filename.
>>32651134
Then I also assume that the dustcover does not match as well. The rear face has a number. It would match the last 3 digits of the serial number if it was matching.
>>32651079
bully ghosts
>>32651162
Just verified. It doesn't match. I remember my grandfather telling me that when they got onboard the ship, Navy required them to remove the bolts/dust covers and throw them in a large bin. The upon leaving, they just picked one up as they were leaving. That is why a lot of them don't match.
>>32650262
>>32649971
That ray skin shows that this isn't just some late war brass nco gunto, but a much nicer piece. There are lots of very important family blades that are still missing and this may be one of them. Please keep going op
>>32651214
I've heard that myself too from multiple sources. It's also why the dust covers are uncommon to find, especially matching. They're kinda tough to put on for those that don't look too hard I think most of the time they just grabbed a bolt only. There probably is a bunch of piles of rusty dust covers on the bottom of San Fransisco bay and San Diego, etc.
>>32651259
This makes me cry. my dust cover could be in Cali.....
>>32651245

Incoming some photos of the hilt
>>32651521
>>32651454
All of the information about the piece is under the grip.
>>32651536
Last photo of hilt
>>32651521
Ok, I see a little hilt under the tape.
>>32651554
Spoke with her, her cousin refuses to remove it. He says he doesn't think it's a family steel and that it wasn't traditionally manufactured so there should be no writing underneath the hilt. Apparently someone told him it was machine made.
Thoughts?
>>32651693
While it probably is machine made, that doesn't mean it's unsigned. Some hand made ones are unsigned too. It's definitely not anywhere near the poorest quality of piece.
Either way, that electrical tape has to go and it's fairly simple to take off the grip. You can easily find out how to do so with google.
Your soon to be grandpa in law killed fitty men, That's all you need to know.
>>32651521
well its in shit fucking condition, tell that shit family to treat it better
>>32651942
He was a medic
>>32652374
Just like mine used to tell people he was a cook.
>his service FAL had three knife-carved kills on the stock
Under that ugly hilt there will probably be a signature of the smith that made it. A date of manufacture may also be determined by the shape of the tang.
>>32650962
what if a Jap bayonet has no markings on the blade at all? my Type 30 only has a 5 stamped into the wood handle between the 2 bolsters
You and your girlfriend are both stupid.
>>32652374
I'm sure he had bad days
>"everyone hug the raccoon!"
>"who the fuck are you calling raccoon?"
>>32650683
youre missing the safety knob. was actually common on bringbacks, officers didnt trust the general troops and made them remove them to make them unfireable
its a type 99 arisaka in 7.7 jap. its a common war trophy from anyone that served in the pacific theater. millions were rounded up in piles after the war and destroyed and everybody who took part in the occupation got to mail one home. yours is a late war model with crude metallurgy and all the refined features missing. they are common rifles and yours is probably worth around $300
the long knife in your OP is a type 30 bayonet, its the matching bayonet for the type 99 jap rifle
the shorter knife is his personal owned navy knife, probably a camillus or similar. post pics of the maker mark, those can be worth a couple hundred
the sword might be worth the most of the bunch, post pics of the side of the blade and closeups of the handle. looks to be a standard NCO jap sword wartime made in factory but hard to tell from your pics
swords were treated the same as rifles after the war. we didnt trust the sneaky japs with a single weapon. the swords were confiscated and rounded up and dumped in the ocean with the rifles
pic related, when you got millions of rifles and swords to destroy in a short amount of time, melting and sawing just wont cut it. gotta dump that shit and make a reef

definitely an IJA army officer sword, look for serial markings and factory date stamp and see if they match teh scabbard. yours looks pretty beat up, you can buy pristine examples for about $1,200-$1,500, id value yours at maybe $500. check ebay for values or go to a sword forum and they can help you further. id recommend keeping them as artifacts of history, since none of those war trophies are really that valuable. if you sell all that, youd pocket maybe a grand. id rather have the family member's history than a measly grand
or be a typical millenial faggot and sell off your grandpas hard work
>>32649966
put oil on everything
>all that rust
buy a gun screwdriver set, some creeping oil and a tub of renaissance wax.
apply creeping oil to threads and let it sit for a few days. unscrew screws fit tightly fitting drivers and GENTLE force.
disassemble everything, down to the last pin. apply renaissance wax to every ever so small surface.

It may be a trainer then, especially if it is poorly made and very blunt.
