So recently there have been contracts awarded for development of two new United States weapons systems.

The Columbia-Class nuclear ballistic missile submarines, of which they have just entered the design phase of the contract awards. Fabrication for the first in class, the Columbia, will begin in 2021 with entry into service occuring in 2028. General Dynamics has claimed that they will attain 86% design maturity prior to beginning fabrication and assembly.

The new SHiELD laser defense pod has recently been awarded a further contract to develop a laser defense weapon capable of destroying the warheads of incoming missiles. This is currently being developed into an external pod to be mounted on aircraft as small as fighter aircraft. The laser internals are developed by Northrop Grumman and Boeing has just been contracted to develop the external pod and integration to aircraft. The current testbed will be an external pod mounted to am F-15. The goal of this technology will be to track and destroy surface-to-air or air-to-air missiles incoming to the aircraft. It is planned to be developed into a 360 degree protection system. This could potentially mitigate the need for stealth and also potentially mitigate an air denial system composed of missile defenses.

I know this is all just abstract information from the defense industry, but what does /k/ think of these new developments?

I like chocolate milk.

>but what does /k/ think of these new developments?
sounds like more boondoggles following the precedent of the F35; another bane on the taxpayer's money.
>>
As one of the few submariners on /k/ (i think theres like 5 of us on here regularly) im pretty fucking excited for the columbias. If they keep up the build/quality that theyve attained with the virginias itll be a gamechanger for us bubbleheads.

yeah i dont care about your thread but i did watch your gif about 35 times

Anything you want to see in your new sub?
>>

>The laser internals are developed by Northrop Grumman and Boeing
>laser pod
>fits on an F-15

Incoming Congressional investigation.
>>
I question whether they'll even get these projects fielded without massive cock-ups and overruns.

t. jaded fed.
>>
>>32638831
More of hangs off the F-15, and its a testbed F-15 the company has lying around.
>>
>>32638830
Hopefully theyll include female berthings in the new design (its gonna happen, may as well plan for it from the start)
Life support systems need a whole new revamp considering the old ones are constantly breaking and im tired of being hypoxic on every deployment.
And for fucks sake please redesign the toilets. I dont care how but our current toilets are a shit.
>>
>>32638835
I have high hopes for the SHiELD not going over. Boeing is a penny pinching Jew of a company, they're surprisingly decent on costs. Northrop Grumman will leach off of papa Boeings financial year for this and Boeing will greedily take as much laser technology as they can.

It's a cool as fuck .gif.
>>
>>32638873
I don't get too much info on things but as I hear more I'll keep you guys posted. I work for a defense company and sometimes I get bored and skim through the internal servers at work. Mostly its accrued public info but its juicy.
>>
>>32638901
Im gonna take some leave and visit the G.E. yards someday, just to see what theyve got going on.
>>
>>32638919
It will also be manufactured in the Newport News Shipyard. Between the two, they will crank out 12 of them while still finishing the current attack sub procurement.
>>
God damnit /k/, if this is gonna be the response to me bringing back military technological information, then I'm not gonna bother telling you assholes.
>>
>>32639074
Hey, i appreciated it and started a conversation based off it, you hussie.
>>
>>32639074
Not much information to go off of tbqh

If I had to choose between civil and defense based research funding, I'll always choose civil, because I prefer seeing the technology released for study rather than being classified for 40+ years first.
>>
>>32639098
You are the only decent person in this thread.
>>
>>32638814
I just don't understand it. So like... the pistol and arm gets suddenly cool upon firing? I'm guessing that when something REALLY hot becomes visible, then other things that aren't as warm are made darker to accentuate the differences in heat. Like if you're just looking at a human body, but then someone shows up with a kettle of boiling water, then the body will go from coloured to pretty much all black because it's nowhere NEAR as hot as the kettle.
>>
>>32639132
That is exactly how FLIR imaging works
>>
>>32639121
Thanks. I try, but im bad at this whole "not being a degenerate piece of shit" thing.
Also this
>>32639120
Most of the population of /k/ isnt gonna give two shits about a submarine, sadly.
>>
>>32639159
I don't understand why people discount submarines. They're only second to aircraft carriers in capability for the navy. Hell, a lot of first world countries rely on submarines for their naval strength and only have helicopter carriers for the I force projection. But everyone on /k/ gets a hard on for the sea triangle. Like how Britain and France are both developing new nuclear ballistic missile submarines.

I'm surprised that some slavaboo hasn't gotten all freaked out that their precious s-500 might become obsolete if America can make their aircraft immune to missiles.
>>
>>32639243
they're probably all too hung over right now to notice or care.
>>
>>32639243
I chalk it up to amount of contact/visibility, honestly.
Not many people have seen a sub in person, or toured one, whereas its hard to not notice a fuckhueg carrier and the surface navy loves their tiger cruises and whatnot.
Its okay that people forget about subs. We like it that way.
>>
>>32639291
So no one understands how a functional naval organization works or what its strengths and weaknesses are outside of naval personnel? Why do I still come here?

Oh right, my glorious autism and gun porn.
>>
>>32639259
Maybe I'll repost this in the early afternoon tomorrow then. So the eurocucks and the slavaboos can get all worked up.
>>
>>32639359
That and submarines are hilariously boring, and have been since the 70s ish.
That said, Blind Mans Bluff is a damn good read if you want good sub stories.
>>
>>32639459
I understand that sub life is probably the most boring job in the blue water navy, but tactically its one of the most important. It has a ton of flexibility. Like how the newer attack subs have a wet deck for launching personnel with those new underwater propulsion systems for quiet insertion onto a beach or into a port.
