theres a manual bolt lock on the charging handle. it looks like a button, bull the bolt all the way back and press down. it should work fine.
the real problem is removing the bolt and op rod

Pull bolt bac and press the little button on the charging handle in. Hold it in and slowly ride the bolt forward and inch or so and you'll feel the groove where it locks. You don't deserve an M1 if it's GI, you should be handling an SKS or Mosin
