Is parachuting into combat zones obsolete? Should the army just do away with airborne regiments?

Super secret squirrels and whatnot.

If the enemy doesn't expect it, and you need to drop a shit ton of stuff behind the enemy without them noticing too much, it works.
>>
Airborne infantry paratroopers became obsolete as soon as these things called helicopters started being used. Paradropping is only useful when a helicopter can't be used, and you're planning on staying there for a while.
>>
>>32637522
It's still useful but not in the way most people think: Joint forcible entry is still a vital aspect of war fighting

You don't want to land directly on top of the objective, you'll die. Instead, you paradrop elsewhere and then march on the objective. The US Army currently lacks the vehicles it needs in order to do that march, but it is working on it.

>>32637620
Or you want to travel a long range and put far more troops on the ground at once.
>>
It's mostly useful now as a form of conventional deterrent.

It means that the USA can put thousands of infantry anywhere in the world in around a day or so without needing an airstrip capable of taking a strategic cargo-plane (C-17). A country hostile to the USA needs to account for this.

>What is rapid deployment and QRF
Being able to rapid deploy a unit anywhere at a moments notice is a strategic advantage.
>>
>>32637522
Yes, parachuting into combat zones is obsolete, the new thing is sanctions.
>>
>>32637522
>is putting as many soldiers as you can shove into a plane anywhere in the world you want obsolete

Gee I dunno.

Walk?

The French Foreign Legion still does combat drops somewhat regularly. Their para regiment is where most of the white anglophones with prior service in other first world militaries end up and it usually gets the top combat assignments as a result. They dropped into Mali in 2013 and Niger in 2015
>>
>>32642683
Americans are not fit enough to walk larger distances. They are too fat for that.
>>
>>32642683
The whole point of this is speed, isn't it?
>>
>regiments

Kek...nice try eurofag

Para regiments are like having a bayonet, you may never need to use one but at least you have one there if you do. Also Helicopter cannot go everywhere

A lot of slavs too. pic related

Paratroopers are still useful when the terrain is wide, far, and wild. It's a cheap mean to get men on the ground.

Shhhhhhhh. The Army thinks airborne is on par with Marines. We let them think that.

Yes let them jump out of planes. I guess they like it.
