It is obsolete. No modern armoured vehicle gives a fuck about 12.7mm and it's total overkill for anything else that can be fulfilled equally by MMGs and LMGs.

it's not obsolete because only the Russians gave enough of a fuck to replace theirs and the 14.5mm is better on every level.

There's even better .50 cals than the M2 on EVERY fucking level but because M2s are cheap and in most armies stockpiles after 60 years of procurement and deployment there will be no replacement.

The US was after a replacement from FN about 20 years ago but determined that procuring the 15mm they were designing would not be worth the cash despite it having nearly twice the penetration of 12.7mm.

Basically :
Tonnes of .50 ball ammo in reserves thanks to WW2.
Thousands of mothballed M2s of varying eras in stockpiles.
No HMG performance upgrade would be worth it now that 25mms are fucking everywhere and you may as well just use a HEDP grenade launcher if you are going to replace the M2.

It's just a relic that fills a non-important niche that costs too much to replace and not enough to warrant looking for replacements.

Same as why 5.56mm is still in use and why 7.62mm is still in use.

it's a .50 BMG machine gun anon, there's not many problems that can't be solved with a liberal application of .50 BMG.

Tell me how a 2 man team is going to carry a gun that is twice the weight of the M240 and enough ammo for it.
