2 questions about this gun

1. Would it serve well as a first timers deer rifle for hunting within 80 yards?

2. Would it be a sin to put a pistol grip and folding stock on one?
>>
>>32618074
No.
Yes.
Buy a Savage Axis or Ruger All American in .308.
>>
>>32618074
yes but get something cheaper
yes
>>
>>32618105
>>32618094
Why wouldn't it make a good deer rifle? I specifically want to shoot with iron sights, and use a wood stock.
>>
>>32618156
Cost wise it's a fucking piece of shit. If you want some hard wood in your hands get any other milsurp bolt and be happier.
>>
>>32618189
What? Mosins are cheap.
>>
>meme rifle
>>
>>32618197
Get a good Mosin, a Finnish Mosin. Those aren't cheap but they are better.
>>
>>32618197
Yeah nah, they're not worth more than $150 tops and that's with all the accessories. Save your cash and buy a Mauser, Enfield, Springfield.
>>
>>32618197
no they aren't they were fun cheap blasters for $100 or even $150 but now the ammo costs more than .308 and the rifles are $220-$400. that's not a budget bolt gun. pay $400 for a nice .308 and you'll save money in the long run, AND it will probably have a smoother bolt.

that said if you decide to get one (I don't regret buying mine) it will take deer just fine. the point is there are better options for a first deer rifle.

if you're gonna bubba it, please be tasteful
That said, I am plannin on obrezing mine if SHTF though
>>
You can get a 7mm Mauser on JG sales for less than what mosins are going for now and it's a much better rifle if for no other reason than the safety doesn't require Slav gorilla hands to use.
>>
>>32618074
Depends on where you live. I originally bought my Mosin for deer hunting only to find out that Fish & Wildlife was rolling in a non-lead munitions requirement for the zone I hunted. As you can guess unless you make your own, non-lead 7.62x54r is practically nonexistent. Because of this, I ended up buying a Marlin 336 BL and now I use that. In retrospect buying a Mosin to hunt is dumb. I mean you CAN hunt with it but why? The only reason Mosins were really popular is because they were cheap and so was the ammo, but now that the supply is dwindling this is less true. Having a mosin is nice sure, but it's barely a few steps from nothing.

You'll get more bang for buck getting an out of the box basic hunting rifle. I used to think like you and that's why I went with a Marlin 336 BL. I threw a decent scope on an over-under mount so I had the versatility of an optic as well as irons.
>>
>>32618074

For a cheap hunting rifle, get a sporterized 1917, Mauser 98 or Lee Enfield. 1917 is GOAT because .30-06 is everywhere, and with dozens and dozens of different factory loadings available to you. All these rifles are better than a nugget for your purpose.
>>
>>32618372
I've though about a 336 but I'd rather clean a bolt gun
>>
>>32618074
8 years ago. Yes it would have been a el cheapo option. Now days since the rifles and ammo are so much higher you would be better of with a budget hunting rifle from savage or mossberg.
>>
I just hopped on gunbroker and holy shit, 300 bucks for a Mosin? Why?
>>
>>32618446
But a Ruger American or an axis doesn't come with a wood stock or iron sights
>>
>>32618469
Then buy a god damn Mauser, they are ten times better. You can even get a pre-sported one on simpson ltd for like 200 bucks in basically whatever caliber you want.
>>
>>32618197
Not anymore. $250 is a good deal these days and ammo is getting harder to find. Also half of them are in garbage shape and have shit bores or are caked with rust all over. I mean, I love the fuck out of my nugget but if what you want is a cheap European surplus deer gun spend a hundred and fifty bucks more and get a Mauser K31 with a good bore, or if nothing else a Carcano or something that's less likely to be in Блят-condition than a nugget. There's plenty of good, widely-available 8mm Mauser, and GP11 Swiss surplus is easily reloadable brass case if you can find the right primers. Of course, the most effective choice would be a .30-06 Springfield since that shit is all over the place, but since you want to take a nugget hunting I'm assuming you want a special snowflake imported wuh-wuh-too rifle.

>>32618463
Supply is running out and there's still plenty of demand.
>>
>>32618239
>ammo costs more than .308
Fucking what? No, it isn't even close.

Yes it would be a good deer rifle.
No it isn't a piece of shit, ignore the idiots saying it is
Yes it would be blasphemy to put a pistol grip, blah blah blah. It will serve your needs just fine unaltered.
>>
>>32618569
Yeah no. It's not called "the garbage rod" for nothing.
And x54r is averaging 50cpr
While x51 can be had for 30cpr
>>
>>32618280
>That said, I am plannin on obrezing mine if SHTF though
And making it even more useless?
Just get an AR, AK or SKS you autist.
>>
>>32618598
>garbage rod
Yeah, except no. You're an idiot
>50cpr
Fucking what? Where do you buy Mosin ammo at that price. Fucking kys
>>
>>32618598
>I get all my gun knowledge from TFB
>>
>>32618598
x54r can still be easily had for well under $0.35/rd if you know where to look, but it's still shitty surplus that's meant to survive nuclear war rather than shoot nicely.
>>
>>32618598
you're and idiot

Cheapest is $0.46/rnd at JGsales.

Mosin defense squad is a thing now? What year is it? Aside from Finns, when have they not been shit?

Non war time Mosins are quite nice, actually. Finns of course are the best though.
>>
>>32618677
Why don't you provide evidence towards your claim then boss?
>>32618678
Since always? They're a good gun. Maybe not the best, but they aren't bad.
>>
>>32618709
Yeah, when they go for <$200 they're a great gun no doubt.
>>
>>32618725
Are you being serious?
>>
>>32618731
Don't tell me you'd pay more than that for a war mosin.
>>
>>32618741
Don't tell me you'd pay more than $80 for a Garand?
>>
>>32618725
>>32618741
I don't see your point. They were cheap because they were plentiful and imported for almost nothing from post-Soviet shitholes, not because they were bad guns. The only possible issues with them are condition, and that is little more than a hassle, and can be easily ascertained if you don't want to deal with it.
>>
>>32618767
Ever the tripfag. You guys certainly liven the place up. Have a crayon buddy.
>>
>>32618776
Who says they're not plentiful anymore? If you must pay $300 for a sewerpipe stuck on a mosin action then it's your money.

>>32618778
That's all they're worth, according to your """logic"""
>>
>>32618793
I didn't realize it was the 1950s. You sure are smart.
>>
>>32618074
The answer to any question about nuggets is always "wash dishes for a week more and get a proper rifle".
>>
>>32618789
>a sewerpipe stuck on a mosin action
But where did you get this idea? Have you only ever shot one rusty, pitted shit-bored nugget out of the millions floating around in your life? If they were still as plentiful as they once were they wouldn't be more expensive now. Quality of manufacture has little to do with the value of historical firearms.
>>
>>32618709
i can buy it locally for way under 50cpr. Try shopping around? Maybe?

I can't imagine it's gotten that bad within the last 4 months.
>>
>>32618803
Hey that's what the price was once, that's all they're worth. Markets never change. I mean, that's why Mosins aren't worth what they're going for all day long now right? Boy I'm sure glad you proved me wrong.
>>
>>32618793
WISH WE COULD TURN BACK TIME
>>
>>32618818
So...nothing to disprove my statement? There isn't any surplus available at the moment, except for the shit I'm trying to sell because I don't shoot surplus ammo anymore.
>>
>>32618793
>$10 for a Mk III No. 1
Those were the days, alright.
>>
>>32618824
>1 year ago is the same as 60 years ago
Gosh, you sure are a sharp one there bud.
>>
>>32618836
Except Mosins have been going up in price for a decade+.
>>
>>32618835
Well to be fair that ad is from 1960 and $10 back then is roughly $100 today, but yeah, I still agree with you.
>>
>>32618834
No, there isn't surplus around right now. Which is one reason I haven't opened my crate. But I paid like 5 or 6 bucks a box for Tula a few months back. Interestingly, just doing a quick search, AIM, classic, lucky gunner... none have Tula. The fuck happened
>>
>>32618074
The only "first" a mosin is good for anymore is "first milsurp." There is a reason why the recommendation has shifted from buy a mosin to build an AR or buy an AK. When you factor in ammo the price/experience/learning factors are no longer there for the mosin.

You would be much better off buying something brand new or non-surplus used.
>>
>>32618881
I've always found x54r locally for cheaper than online, minus surplus though. So I'm pretty confirm I can still find it less than .308 by at least a few bucks locally. Just haven't bought any lately, have older surplus and some Tula leftover so no need.
>>
>>32618859
And people eat that shit up at $300, why would they drop the price? They ran one of those "Last Crate" deals that they ran every year since mosins started getting imported and set the price at $250. Some schmuck actually paid that much for one and so it goes. I remember one CtD add putting them for $250 for the better part of a year with big bold letters "LAST CRATE SPECIAL" the whole thing took up 4 pages, you could even buy a "sniper special" for $600 and it would come with a copy of Enemy at the Gates. Next year they ran their usual mosin ad and they were fucking $150.
>>
>>32618917
Everything is worth what it's purchaser will pay for it.
>>
>>32618932
True, like pet rocks. At the end of the day you realized you paid $30 for a rock with some nail polish on it. And a birth certificate.

If you want to go the super cheap route, get a 12ga shotgun.
I know its not exactly what you are looking for, but slugs should be accurate enough for sub 80 yards.
It should be easy enough to find an old shotgun for $100 or less.

Ok bud.
