How come really light (12 pounds of less) short barreled (16 inches or less) belt fed machine guns aren't a thing?
Basically, instead of having big ol guns like the 240 and 249, why not put an open bolt and belt fed upper n existing M4s?
The only gun that's like that is the negev
The US is trying to do something like this with the LSAT program.

Heavy barrels are heavy.

>The KAC LMG, Ares Shrike, and Stoner 63 don't exist
We haven't bothered because the LSAT in 6.5mm can replace 5.56/7.62
>>32614427
Stoner 63 isn't really a LMG cause it was designed to be a modular weapon.
>>32614458
It can be used as a belt fed 5.56 gun with automatic fire and has a quick change barrel. Sounds like it fills the roll just fine.
>>32614333
I'd like to add that 30 steel belt links for 5.56 are lighter than 1 30 round pmag
>>32614333
>what is HK21
>>32614427
>stoner 63 was never adopted
anon please

Because the heavier the weapon, the less recoil you will feel, and when you're shooting this beast during combat operation you want to minimize recoil for accurate suppressing fire. And the heavier barrel increases weight obviously, but is necessary for a weapon that can shoot so many rounds in such a short period of time.
>>32614333
A proper MG needs to be designed to withstand a shitload of full auto fire in short periods of time
Early M4A1s would literally burst their barrels when SOCOM would try the heavy suppressive fire bounding tactics that carried over from Vietnam

It weighs more than a saw, but to be fair it's definitely on the light end of mmgs/gpmgs. I think it's the perfect saw for a country that uses grown man rounds.

Barrel would melt.

>>32614427
Stoner 63 was never adopted by the military otu side of Navy seals because it was expensive, complex, and fragile
>>32614333
Any sort of Machine gun needs a heavy barrel adn the ability to quickly change the barrel since its not water cooled or up in an aircraft getting cold air cooled.
M4 would melt

Because trump hasn't repealed NFA yet.

because muzzle velocity and effective range?

Literally everything you said was factually incorrect and inconsistent with historical and my personal accounts. Is that you Ian? How's that fat sodomite boyfriend of yours doing?

>Only the Negev
MGA is starting to make Fullsize but compact M249 SAWs in a multicaliber platform. Link related is their full SBR variant
