SVT 40 thread
Could my fellow kommandos help me identify this rifle? There is a gentleman selling it nearby for $1600 and he said that it's a non refurb with the cleaning rod and sling. I don't know too much about these markings and there isn't much online.

Those blurry squiggles look like a snake if you squint hard and hop around on one foot with your head sideways.

I think that's a tula star, but the receiver is stamped izhevsk
>>32614071
That stock looks sanded and refinished. also arent plum bolts only on re-ferbs?
>>32614104
I saw this already. Thanks friend
I was mainly concerned about the 2 triangles on the top of the receiver. I don't know if that's a refurb mark
>>32614123
I have seen both sides on the forums. The carrier looks gold to me personally.
This isn't a good photo but you can see it doesn't have the AVT stock
Looks like a refurb but I wouldn't pay more then 1300$ for it
>>32614135
You can tell its a refurb because the bolt is plum and is electro pencilled matched
>>32614123
The electro pencilled number on the bolt is a give away
>>32614077
The electro stencil numbers give it away as a refurb
>>32614193
That being said, what is a fair price? I don't want to overpay but I've wanted one of these for a long time. I'd rather pay a little more and still have the gun
>>32614223
I wouldn't pay more than $900 for a refurb, IMO
>>32614223
Eh they go anywhere form 1000 to 1600.
Id offer 1300 if the bore is good.
>>32614261
The gun looks like it's in excellant shape and he said the bore is good.
$1600 did seem high to me
>>32614323
1600 is fair for a non refurb but those force matching stencil marks give it away as a rearsenal
>>32614071
way too expensive that is worth 1100 tops. bolt is clear refurb.

SVT 40 Owner here. The most important part of an SVT is the state of the grooves in the chamber and the piston/piston cup assembly in the fron of the gun. You absolutely need to inspect these parts for pitting and/or a loose fit. if these parts are worn then you will get an SVT40 that only works at the highest gas settings and may still have reliability/timing issues.
>>32614484
I have heard they are finicky. There are many disassembly videos on yourube. Can I just inspect the parts for wear or is there anything in particular that I should look for?
>>32614223
$1300 is fair. They're not getting any cheaper.
>>32614071
Heres pic of my SVT40 Got it in europe where it was in arsenal shape with completely fresh barrel and piston assembly. it works fine on the 1.1 gas setting and i havent had a single malfunction when shooting the correct ammo. However soft brass like Prvi partizan is a complete mess since the case wall literally gets stamped into the flutes of the chamber by the gas pressure
>>32614509
just get a good light and find an angle where you can see the flutes of the chamber clearly.
with the piston assembly you just want to check if the contact surfaces are smooth or are pitted with rust. and then you want to check the fit between the piston and the piston cup. it should be somewhat snug but still sliding freely. if theres some noticeable sideways movement then you will probably need to turn up the gas settings a lot.
As far as ive heard then Most issues with the SVT comes with timing issues because of its weak extraction that has to be helped by the gas flutes. and if that gas flute effect dissipates before extraction is properly initiated then you will get all kinds of failures to extract. Hard brass/steel cased ammo helps you a lot here.
Pic related is how somewhat hard brass looks like after being ejected. notice the flute lines
>>32614509
heres a pic of the chamber flutes as they look brand new. bear in mind when you inspect the gun that that they are hard to keep clean and they tend to be filled with debris.
>>32614071
Are they still available from Russia? If so, I would wait to see what Trump does.
>>32614123
Correct on both counts. Obviously a refurb.
$1600 is a complete ripoff. If you're a saavy shopper, you can find them for $1k in good shooting condition on Gunbroker.
>>32614669
Sexy.
>>32614944
Probably all been surplus'd out by now, but you can still get them for $600ish in Canada. Hopefully we'd see some inventory of them get bought by a murrican importer and sold for a relatively reasonable price.

>Non-refurb
>plum bolt
>stenciled force-match
You being taken for a ride yo. I'd offer $1200 if everything looks good inside. Certainly check the piston and regulator for excessive rust/corrosion.
>>32614071
desu i'd say wait until February or so, trump could potentially open the floodgates for foreign imports, don't want to be down $1200 because you didn't wait a month
>>32615032
Thanks for confirming everything. I messaged the seller and offered 1300. He genuinely beleived that he had a non refurb. We'll see what he says. Thanks guys
Hold me back guys. I talked the seller down to 1450 but he lives 3 hours away.
>>32617675
1400 if he drops it off..
>>32614071
I know that a plumb colored bolt indicates refurbishment but other than that I've got nothing.
>>32615622
More like a year if that. It takes a long time for shit to get imported
>>32615622
You're retarded.
>>32614071
>paying US$1600 for a C$300 rifle
>>32618656
How much do you guys pay for Garands?
>>32618675
S-sorry.
OP,
I have two SVT 40s. One is a Finn Capture I bought for $1150 two years ago. The other is a parts gun; Finn captured receiver, russian refurb bolt, a new old stock barrel, and an original scope on a repro mount, AKA the perfect shooter SVT40. That one I got a month ago for $850 shipped to my door.
My point is, there are deals out there. Today I would pay up to 1100 for that rifle probably, maybe a bit more if it is mechanically great (rifling sharp and no corrosion in gas system) but only like up to 1200 MAX. A Finned rifle I'd pay a but more, but still under 1400.
Pic is my Finnish SVT
>>32618700
I appreciate the extra perspective. I've been searching locally and haven't found any of these. I know they are rare. I don't buy anything off gunbroker. I would rather pay the extra few hundred bucks and still have the gun. It really is in beautiful shape
>>32615032
They were never available from Russia on the first place. Grand majority of refurbished SVT-40 rifles that were imported to Western Europe and USA were from Ukraine and the rest from former Warsaw Pact countries.
>>32617746
In fact plum color in bolt does not necessarily indicate that the rifle has been refurbished - according info found from Soviet archives some manufacturers blued bolts of mainly late production rifles already during World War 2. Electro-penciled forced match serial numbers and refurbishment markings on the other hand are guaranteed indicator for that.
>>32620914
Refurb or not, I have a hard on for russian guns and haven't bought an svt yet. Still need an rpk
>>32620914
also the late blued bolts are made from a stronger steel than the earlier ones.
1941 recapture refinish recap refin recap refin sold to america in an avt stock. 1100 is the price in the us. If your in canada its the same deal but to canada and for 400 dollars. Answered?
>>32620914
But were they the Plum blue all the refurbished have? In theory if they were some Finn capture SVTs should have those bolts, which is something I have never seen.
>>32620850
You do you OP, if you really want it now go for it.
However I recommend you check the trader forum on gunboards. SVTs come up often enough and cheaper than $1400 a couple times a month or so.
>>32622344
Not really. Finnish offensive ended in December of 1941, followed by trench war that continued until Soviet offensive in summer - autumn of 1944. Due to this Finnish Army captured almost all its SVT-40 rifles in year 1941.
As mentioned the Soviets blued mainly bolts of late production rifles.
At the same time year 1941 was the high point in manufacturing of SVT-40 rifles with production numbers dwindling already the next and AVT-40 starting to replace in it production.
