Gauge means the diameter of the round balls you could make with 1lb of lead if the number of balls is the gauge number, meaning 12 gauge is the diameter of the balls you'd make if you made 12 equally heavy balls out of a pound of lead. 20 gauge is the same thing but with 20 balls, which is why 20 gauge is smaller than 12.
