I don't have a .22 yet. The obvious answer is to just get a Ruger 10/22. Thing is I cant stand the fucking bolt release on those things, and I kind of want a bolt action .22 instead of a semi-auto. Are the "youth rifles" a good choice for a plinkster that I can take to any gun range and have some fun with? I also like the idea of something short to double as a pack rifle if necessary. Which one is the best? savage rascal? henry mini-bolt? Remingtn 514?
>>
Only problem you'll run into is that youth rifles tend to be youth sized. i.e. tiny stocks. If you're a manlett this shouldn't be a problem
>>
The youth rifles are okay if you get a full sized stock, but single shot will get old.

Get a Savage MkII with an Accu trigger.
>>
>>32579081
Yeah that's true. I just want a bolt action .22 and don't want to spend much money at all. the Ruger American is great but I'd rather get one of those in .308. I just want a cheap ass .22 bolt action that works.
>>
>>32579106
You may want to seriously consider a 9mm bolt action, iirc theyre around 300 new, you could probably find a used one for a lot cheaper. Theres a newer company making them, and I think Marlin made a 45 version, something like camp rifle it was called
>>
>>32579060
could also get a lever action. they are relatively common but usually alittle more expensive i think.
>>
The 10/22 bolt release mod is a 10 min job
>>
>>32579162
Nvm, the company making the guns is just converting RIA 22tcm rifles, and price tag is 750

And the Marlin camp guns are semi, not too cheap either
>>
A youth .22 singleshot will be the lightest handiest rifle you will ever own. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Savage has a reputation for accuracy, and I love the savage accutrigger.
>>
>>32579169
If you want a "golden boy" with the tricked out brass $450-500.

They have simpler ones the exact same just regular black finish and furniture less glossy I've seen go as low as $270 -300.
>>
>>32579089
This. Savage MKII is a great rifle. I almost prefer it to my 10/22.
>>
I have a sick obsession with the 1022. The bolt release is terrible but can be fixed in an hour if youre unskilled or bought cheaply.

The mag release system is mediocre but can be bought cheaply and remedied.

There is no better 22 rifle if you only want one. After a bit of trigger work i can make 3" groups at 100 yards and im a mediocre shot.

If you really cant stand the bolt release consider the american rimfire. It is all about mags and 1022 mags are literally the best.

I have 2 dozen 22 rifles, not even kidding. Not biased either, i like all guns equally.

Just picked up a Henry Golden Boy the other day for $400 otd. Awesome little plinker.
>>
>>32579060
I never really understood what the issue of the bolt release on the 10/22 was. Does anyone actually use the damn thing? I dont find it useful in the slightest, ive always just racked the bolt after inserting a new magazine like on an AK. I could understand if it had a last round bolt hold open, but it doesnt.

Why is the 10/22's bolt catch such a big deal?

It's a fucking .22. When would you ever need to quickly release a locked-back bolt. It's not like you're gonna be slamming mags into it and you can't waist the extra second racking a charging handle takes.
>>
>>32580624
Mostly for the ranges where your required to show the chamber open.

To the op, there are usually many used bolt action 22's around used. I was eyeing one up at cabelas for around $150.
>>
>>32581037
Couldnt you just use a chamber flag

It still works just fine. It just takes 2 hands and all of 3 seconds to figure out.
>>
OP get a savage markII
I have one. It's neat. I love bolt-actions 2bh family
>>
>>32579060
>I cant stand the fucking bolt release on those things

volquartzen auto bolt release. 10$ online. 10 minutes tops.
>>
Marlin model 60 is a good 22 easy to use cheap. But its a semi auto, a ton of fun tho.
>>
>>32580716
>>the bolt release is terrible

its really not even that bad. just gotta learn how to work it, or just buy an auto bolt release. 10$ tops.

>>the mag release is mediocre

older 10/22s have a shitty push button on the bottom, yes. newer ones have a lever that's much easier to use.

>>can only do 3" groups

he said he was a mediocre shot.
>>
>>32579162

Still, Special Interest Arms (whom I assume is the company to which you're referring) makes an excellent product. I have one of their 7.62x39 Enfield conversions and it's excellent.
>>
>>32581270
what barrel is that? been thinking about a new threaded barrel for my 22, but I think those bull barrels just make the rifle look dopey.
>>
>>32579060
The Savage Rascal is a fantastic gun for a single shot .22 bolt action.

Yeah, short LOP means you've gotta scrunch up some, but unless you're Shaq sized, it'll be doable.

Great gun for a squirrel killing pack rifle.

>>32582834
>>32581270
>>32581015
OP here. Good to know. However I still want a bolt action. For plinking and general range time I prefer bolt actions. Unless I'm surrounded by a large pack of rabid squirrels I don't think I'm really going to need a semi-auto .22. It's just more moving parts and thus more shit that can go rong.
>>
>>32579060
>Thing is I cant stand the fucking bolt release on those things
That thing is very easily replaced with a more functional bolt release, or you could attempt to modify the factory release to be automatic. (https://www.midwayusa.com/product/928688102/volquartsen-automatic-bolt-release-ruger-10-22)

Having had a Savage MkII with an accutrigger and a 10/22, I must say I prefer the 10/22 for most practical hunting and shooting. The Savage was probably better for long range shots, but for the types of game that .22's are used for (squirrel mostly), in the environment I was in (NC) the 10/22 was more than adequate. The edge I got in accuracy/range with the Savage wasn't very noticeable in field conditions.
>>
>>32582854
Standard barrel that comes on the 10/22 tactical.

I think it looks dumb, I'm gonna replace it with a bull barrel at some point.
>>
>>32582984
If you don't get a CZ rimfire you're missing out.

To be honest, the original mag release works well with the original ten round mags as Bill Ruger intended for the rifle to use.

That said, FUCK BILL RUGER!
