Talking from a Muhreens perspective.

No. Assuming you joined in the summer of 2011 after you graduated HS, you would have gone through bootcamp/infantry training for the rest of the year and gotten to your operating unit around January/February of 2012. You would not be sent directly to a unit that was deploying in the immediate future, and most likely would have gone to a unit that had just returned from a deployment, which means at least another year wait until your unit would deploy again. This puts you in Afghanistan in early 2013 at the absolute earliest, and that's if you lucked out and got sent to a unit that was actually deploying to Afghanistan(*combat deployment werestarting to become rare at this time). By 2013 the drawdown was in full force and most deployments were cheesedick deployments stuck on big bases not doing anything. 2011 was the last year of widespread combat in Afghanistan, and 2012 was the last year where you could possibly get lucky ad sent to one of the few remaining hot AOs, but by 2013 it was pretty much over. My second deployment was in 2012 and it fucking sucked in comparison to my first one in 2010-2011. We only got shot at twice in 7 months and both times it was from like 400+ meters away and I was in the back of an MRAP and didn't even get to do anything. My first deployment we were foot mobile and got in firefights almost every day from much closer ranges.

2009 was the last year of HS graduates that could have joined the infantry and been more likely to see combat than not, and 2010 HS grads would have had a chance, but not a very good one. Anything after that and you didn't miss out on much. trust me. If you would have joined in summer of 2011 you most likely would not have even gotten a combat deployment, and even if you did luck out and get sent to unit that deployed to Afghanistan, it would have been extremely boring and unfulfilling.

I graduated HS in 2009 and enlisted early 2010. Deployed 2011-2012 in Kunar. All the new guys who came in right after we got back never got to fight. They got stuck sweeping and mopping for 3 years and being treated like shit for not having a cib.
