I've always been facinated by crossbows that don't shoot through centre

how do you calibrate the spine of a bolt? because it's so much shorter than an arrow

does your bolt even flex to line with the string (not the direction the bolt is pointing)
or do you just rely on the track/groove to set the trajectory

also who do so few crossbows have a stock so you can load pushing against your stomach (not standing on it)

and you don't volley fire crossbows, the range/weight of the bolts means either massive wind deflection, insufficient damage upon impact, or being out-ranged by traditional bows (or a combination of these)

bolts weigh alot (not modern ones), even more than arrows

also the crossbow imparts/stores more mechanical energy than a bow can hope to achieve (unless you're Odysseus), thats the reason they had a crank to reload it

The Downside is that they're slow as fuck to reload. Not quite as much as a Musket but still enough for the phraise "You've shot your bolt".

Trained Archers can deliver at least 1 arrow every couple seconds, more like one per.

Because traditional archery puts the arrow on the RIGHT side of the bow so that it just falls right down on the shelf.

But arrows have shit penetration, only cause good damage when using broadhead points, and while they have decent range you must really train to use them (like a Sling) because you have to aim by muscle memory.
