What is the minimum barrel length necessary to get the most out of a .357 magnum or .44 magnum ammo?

8"

Seriously?
>>
>>32529367
According to bbti, 357 maxes out around 16".

>>
>>32529367
Velocity increases quite a bit up to the 4" mark, then the increase is more modest per added inch of barrel length. If you really want the MOST out of it you will need a levergun.

.357 is great out of a rifle. It's one of those rounds that keeps getting better as you add barrel length. Same with .44 mag.

A levergun
>>
I was always partial to 6" but technically the longer the better.
>>
>>32529367
For .357 I'd say at least 4 inches if you don't want what is basically a hard recoiling .38 special. Aesthetically though I believe that revolvers look best at 5" - 6.5".
>>

>Minimum

Anon pls. Anyways, 5 inches is a pretty good compromise between ballistics and carriability. Some states require a longer barrel for hunting.
>>
>>32529367

4 inches is the fudd standard.
>>
>>32529419
Seconded, 3.5 best..5

16 inches
12 inches is also good
7-8 inches if you want a short enough pistol to actually still be able to carry while getting a good gain over 6 inches.
>>
>>32530922
Thanks. 6 inches looks like a great length for the cartridge. I understand why that is the common versatile length even if it makes carrying a little harder.

W-why?
>>

What would actually happen if you shot someone with that, would their body basically be mush?
>>
>>32529367

The minimum I'd recommend is 4". 6" is a good compromise between actually being able to carry it on your hip and ballistic performance.
>>
>>32531301
That wouldn't be lethal past pissing distance.
>>
>>32531331
Let's say it's point blank

It would still be less damaging than using a shotgun with a real barrel. Loud as balls though.
>>
>>32530922
Anyone have a similar chart for .38? I've heard ".357 is the same as .38 out of a 2-3" barrel and want to know the truf.
>>
>>32530922
Question on this.
Can anyone explain why, as a trend, all these different loads seem to peak at 16", then lose energy at 17", then regain some of it at 18"? I dont physics well enough to understand.
>>
>>32529426
They're pretty rad in lever actions. The gas seal helps.
>>
>>32531388

Because as gas expands, it exerts less and less force on boolit.

Friction with the barrel still doesn't give a shit, it wants the bullet to stop now.
>>
>>32531388
barrel = friction when there isn't an active force behind the bullet anymore, which would be at 17"+
>>
>>32529426
I was going to suggest 5, less is similar to +p 9mm in smaller pistols anyway.
>>
>>32533033
Hes asking why it then goes back up at 18 inches

I was going to ask the same thing
>>
>>32531388
>lose energy at 17", then regain some of it at 18"?
Probably has to do with the exact barrels used.
>>
>>32531388
Honestly these testers don't have barrels in every inch, that is why it's segmented lines. Different manufacturers have different designs including number of grooves for rifling , twist rate, and true bore size. All counts to frictiin

The 18 was less restrictive than the 17.
>>
>>32533141
A perfect test would be using the same barrel blanks to make each result, they used different guns
>>
>>32532970
>>32533033
No i got that, i understand the basics of it.
>>32533119
This is what i really meant, sorry for convoluted phrasing.
>>32533122
>>32533141
And this makes sense. Thanks for clarifying yall. I never even considered the differences in barrels.
>>
>>32529441
Less so with 44 mag unless you handload but yes it is a noticeable improvement

>>32529367
I don't understand the appeal for the 357 mag, why not just step up to 44 mag?
>>
>>32535884
You can use it in smaller framed revolvers
>>
>>32529426
This. Magnum leverguns are capable durr rifles.

Why do you do this?
Are you just trying to derail or raise ire?
Mission. Fucking. Accomplished.

On topic, 4" or 5" are good barrel lengths. 4" is as short as I would consider going because it gets REALLY hard to aim using iron sights if you go any shorter. 5" on the long end because any longer and it will be very cumbersome and easy for someone to grab a hold of and redirect.
>>
>>32536269
? sorry i guess ??
>>
>>32535884
Smaller guns, less recoil, cheaper ammunition.
>>
>>32531365
I'm also curious
>>
>>32529434
And a tree in the park
>>
>>32535884
Why does anybody go for smaller calibers?

Less recoil and the guns can be made smaller and lighter
>>
>>32533141
>>32533148
They ought to have started with an 18" or longer barrel and cut it down as testing progressed
>>
>>32535884
I don't understand the appeal of 44 mag, why not just step up to .454 Casull?
>>
>>32531206

At this point you might as well use one of those pipe shotguns that you basically punch people with to set off the shell.
>>
>>32535884
In terms of rifles I've always heard .357 has a flatter trajectory than .44. Not sure how true it is.
